Another route suggestion for bikes from STL airport to St. Charles Katy Trail, and pretty frugal - but must be done Monday through Fri during working days hours. Take the STL Metrolink from STL airport
to North Hanley Station, you can travel with bike. At North Hanley
Station, catch the St. Charles Area Transit (SCAT)bus for 50 cents. It has a bike rack on it that will accomodate 3 bikes. SCAT will take you directly to Main St. in St. Charles - there's a drop at Amistar Casino. which is 1 blk away from the Katy Trail. PLEASE LOBBY ST. CHARLES CITY GOVERNMENT TO EXTEND THE HOURS OF THIS BUS!!
Let them know it is vital for your tourism dollars!!!!
Tom from Cleveland on 12/29/2010 11:37 PM
Could take Metrolink all the way from St. Louis Amtrak station if you
are using Amtrak for your trip shuttle (at least that is what I am
thinking). I think those SCAT busses only run mornings and late
afternoons to serve commuters.

Longer, but all on bike: Take Lambert Int'l Blvd east to Air Cargo Road to McDonnell Blvd; east on Airport Road, north on Hanley/Graham; west on Charbonnier/Aubuchon/Missouri Bottom; which joins the MRT, going over the Missouri River on Rte 370 (dedicated bike trail is reached by taking a right on side road just prior to reaching 370 and dumps you alongside the KATY in north St. Charles).

Take Amtrak back. If so leave from the Kirkwood station $60. Make sure you ask that it has the bike car leaves at 4:30 pm. The Bike Stop will take you over in van for $50 636-724-9900. If you are brave you might be able to bike to the station. Just not sure of traffic. Some of the B&B's in St Charles also transport you to station if you stay with them. Check other postings for info.
Terry from Festus on 07/11/2013 10:45 PM
The guy at the bike shop located in the Sedalia Depot told me he had an agreement with Katy Bike Rental in Defiance where you can rent a bike from one and leave it with the other. I do not know if this would be an option for you but could be some useful info.

We are on transamerica trail (heading east). We are planning to take the Katy trail. What is the best ways to and from the Transamerica trail to Katy?
DSD on 07/09/2013 08:47 PM
Nina, Looks like your route is in southern Kansas crossing at Pittsburg into Missouri and going through Springfield. Rather than heading north after crossing into Missouri to the start the Katy Trail in Clinton, Missouri, I would head north in Kansas and cross near Fort Scott into Missouri which is closer to Clinton. However the Transamerica crosses the Mississippi River down at Chester, Illinois but the Katy Trail ends near St. Louis, Missouri, a little out of your way. But following the river from St. Louis down to Chester is a very scenic route. Hope this helps you.
ArkyKenny on 07/09/2013 09:19 PM
I don't disagree with DSD, but it might be easier to just go north on 13 north of Springfield to Clinton where the Katy starts. Hwy 13 has a broad shoulder. I say that because those are some small, shoulderless roads cutting through to Clinton from Kansas, and by the time you get around Truman Lake, it may just be easier to just take 13.
Trek on 07/09/2013 09:31 PM
You might go to crazyguyonabike.com and search "Katy Trail" to see how other Transam riders have connected to the Katy. Most journals there are complete with pictures that might give you an idea of what the route is like both east and west of the Katy.
Darrell from Jefferson City, Mo. on 07/10/2013 03:20 AM
A route to consider. The Transamerica Trail crosses the Frisco Highline Trail at Walnut Grove Missouri. For all to consider, is this feasible? Take the Frisco Highline from Walnut Grove to Bolivar, take hwy 32 west to Highway 13 and go north to Clinton and the Katy Trail.
I have never ridden this route but it seems that it would work as a decent route between the Transamerica and the Katy trails.
Just recently read one report on Crazyguyonabike.com of a fellow that used this route, in reverse (going south), on his tour to get to Springfield Mo. from the Katy Trail.
Darrell from Jefferson City, Mo. on 07/10/2013 04:00 AM
Now that I think of it the Frisco Highline Trail comes out on an outer road to Hwy 13 near the exchange at Highway 13 and Aldrich Road. You would NOT NEED to take hwy 32 out of Bolivar, but you could.
ArkyKenny on 07/10/2013 10:43 AM
Agree Darrell . Good thinking. The Transamerica Trail crosses Frisco Highline Rail Trail (FHT) north of Springfield, and FHT goes to Bolivar, to Hwy 13. That would be the way I got to Clinton. The FHT gets a little sandy in some places out there between Springfield and Bolivar, but it's nothing a touring bike could not handle. Then, 13 is a good road to Clinton and the Katy.

El Toro on 07/11/2013 12:30 PM
I believe 54 carries quite a lot of vehicle and truck traffic. I cannot remember how good/wide the shoulder is. Can anybody else help with this??
Anonymous on 07/11/2013 10:22 PM
On CGOAB I've read where TransAm'ers will start north toward Butler, MO, from towns as early as Newton, Eureka, Chanute, or even Giard, KS. From Butler, they take the back-roads to Clinton. Just about any route will work with light traffic or good road shoulders. Good Luck.

in June of 2012, my husband and I rode the Katy Trail with our daughter, who was not quite two at the time. I wrote a really long travel journal, with lots of pictures.

Wow, what a beautiful and awesome journal. LOVED it! Thank you very much for posting it. What a great thing to take your daughter and what a nice leisurely pace to it. I rode with all my children in bike seats and have fond memories of it, though alas we never thought to bring them on such an epic ride.
One day I will edit my journal from last June and post it. My wife and I did Clinton to Jeff City and want to do the whole thing this year.
Thanks again for your great journal!
Trek on 01/28/2013 07:59 AM
I really enjoyed your ride journal. Although we don't have small children, I can relate to the pace that you took to enjoy your surroundings as you went. It will be interesting to see another journal in a few years with three bikes instead of two. Or maybe a tandem and a half bike.
You are fortunate to live in Columbia with the spur and the Katy so close. We've started/ended several rides at Flat Branch.
As you keep riding, there are many wonderful trails that make for nice weekend or minivacation trips. Crazyguyonabike dot com is a good place to search the journals for other rail trails such as The Racoon River Valley and the High Tressel Trail near Des Moines Iowa, The Root River Trail in southeastern Minnesota, The Mickelson in South Dakota, etc.
Thanks for sharing your ride with us.

Your journal/story of your trip was really quite interesting and could be an inspiration to other parents wanting to spend some quality time with their children! Penny is a very lucky young lady to have you as parents!!
eht from Columbia, MO on 07/06/2013 07:01 PM
I just stumbled on your journal looking up some information about the Globe Hotel. It is absolutely wonderful, and inspiring. Penny is a lucky (and cute!) little girl. When our kids were just a bit older, we started a tradition of family rides every Memorial Day weekend, doing the whole trail, and some train rides, over several years. It was so fun to see that you were at many of the same places. Just today, my daughter, now 18, and getting ready to head off for college, said, as we were doing a lunch ride from Columbia to Rocheport, "Mom, we really should do one of those family Katy Trail rides again!" Your journal certainly made me want to! Thanks for sharing!

My daughter and I just rode to Rocheport for lunch, and we LOVED the brick oven pizzas! It's a hot day, but they have a shady patio (under the biggest Mulberry Tree I have ever seen) and a big fan going. The pizzas--all 10 inch thin crust single pizzas, choose your own toppings--were ready in just a few minutes, straight out of the brick oven, and they were delicious. They are only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons and evenings, but definitely worth a stop. There are also sandwiches and a salad on the menu, which I have heard are good, but haven't sampled myself.

This was an incredibly comfortable and clean place to stay. The room was large and well accomodated with a very comfortable King size bed in a bike friendly environment. We were easily able to fit our bikes into the elevator and had ample space in the room to park them overnight. The food from the delicatessan/eatery next to the casino area was very good, reasonably priced and the portions were very large. I would definitely recommend staying here as it is literally on the KATY trail, as the bike trail winds its way through the parking lot before heading up the hill to the bridge crossing over to the north side of the river. The Casino got a little smokey and I was $6 poorer after my attempts to win big at the penny slots, but all in all a great place to call home for one night.

They must have had quite a storm south of Booneville last night: Lots of big sticks all over the trail that kept getting caught in my spokes. I probably stopped 10x between Booneville and Sedalia to remove sticks that were caught in y frame or spokes--and I was trying to dodge them.
