I'm planning a trip to hike from Machens or St. Charles to Clinton. Any advice on this? Is there an option for crossing the MO besides the highway bridges? Also, any advice or idea on cost to get from Amtrak station to either of the above trailheads? Thanks in advance.

Bonnie from Kansas City on 06/01/2012 08:13 AM
there are some journals from people who have hiked the trail on this site. I would start there. Have fun!

SJK from Saint Louis, MO on 06/01/2012 08:36 AM
There is a seperate bike/pedestrian lane at the Page Avenue bridge that will dump you out on the Katy at MM 43. However, that is about a 14 mile urban hike to Creve Coeur park and this bridge from the Amtrak station in Kirkwood. If you are somewhat flexible with your schedule, then I think you could get a shuttle in Clinton and get to St. Charles for $50-$60. You can look at/utilize the "Share a Shuttle" link on this site's home page to work that out. This same home page also has links to the Katy hikes that Bonnie mentions under trip reports that were done by a couple of different individuals a few years back.

How Long to Bike entire Trail

just sayin' from kcmo on 12/19/2012 07:04 PM
1-10 days, but your mileage may vary.

Paulie from Knoxville on 12/20/2012 03:12 AM
Sam, the entire Katy trail is 237 miles long. Divide how many miles a day you feel comfortable riding into the distance you want to travel. I like to take 3 days and ride 70+ per day.

Darrell from Jefferson City, Mo. on 12/20/2012 04:51 AM
A leisurely 5 days at 40 to 50 miles a day works! Taking in the sights and visiting with people makes it a more enjoyable trip, IMO.

El Toro on 12/20/2012 08:04 AM
I've done it a few times in 3. Clinton-Boonville. Boonville-Rhineland. Rhineland-St. Charles.

Ride back to Hermann on day 4 and catch Amtrak back to Kansas City (home).

kevin from Jeff City on 12/26/2012 01:15 PM
One day, or a lifetime. It all depends on how and why you ride. There's something new to discover every mile.

Possible 2013 - 1 Day KT Rider on 12/08/2012 03:49 PM
I know there is a section for the one day rider elites but did anyone do it in 2012 with Machens added? Also there was a dispute for the one day record but what is the actual record for ride time and full time? Also it looks like 5AM start is good and 14+ hrs later puts you at 7PM+ so the darkness in late June is just starting out correct? And a road bike with possible wider (28?) tires works? Stopping time is limited to only about an hour total? Any takers for 2013? If over 50 you need a doctor's note.

Doug from Edwardsville, IL on 12/09/2012 12:59 PM
I don't know if the one-day record included Machens. But in June, you should be able to start out in Clinton at 5:20 (civil twilight) and would have to finish by 9:02pm (civil twilight in St. Charles/Machens). Going East to West, you get 27 more minutes, obviously: 5:05am to 9:14pm.

ArkyKenny on 12/09/2012 03:39 PM
This is a potentially epic ride in serious need of of leadership and/or sponsorship. Gravel grinder rides like the Dirty Kanza and Trans-Iowa are exponentially growing in popularity, bikes are being specifically designed and built for same, and lots of people (including me) want to know if they have what is takes to do something like this on the edge of what is possible.

Please, somebody out there, organize a "Summer Solstice Katy Daytripper" ride, to include a party afterwards in Clinton.....or St. Charles, and sign me up! I also think that STRICT adherance to Katy's daylight only policy should be maintained: That would be part of the fun, and challenge.

Paul Toigo from Kansas City on 12/13/2012 11:15 PM
I tried to organize such a ride this year, but I had limited interest. Then work shipped me out precluding such a ride in 2012. I MIGHT be able to do 2013 ride. For those interested, do you want to do it on the summer solstice proper, which will be Thursday, June 20, 2013? If it has to be on a weekend, I can only do Sunday, June 23.

Terry from Festus on 12/13/2012 11:51 PM
If you decide on the Thursday some where along the trail you will have to contend with the 300 riders participating in the 2013 DNR ride. The good news is that the trail will never be better groomed than during that week.

Possible 2013 - 1 Day KT Rider on 12/15/2012 06:04 AM
Weekend warriors on Sun. would be less than on Thurs. with the 300 + DNR crew. Sun. could be a plan. Paul you have the advantage of doing it before so West to East is the preferred direction? You had a support group along the way. Is this year Machens included? What is your bike? Also my thoughts were for a cause as the 2006 breast cancer ride in the rain all day.

Paul Toigo from Kansas City on 12/16/2012 10:32 PM
Yes, I rode West-to-East on June 22, 2007. The direction was determined by David Pratt.

For the 2013 assault, can we table the direction question for now? More than usual, my thoughts run too long on that subject for this forum. :-) I'd be happy to discuss it on the phone. (Ray master, you have my permission to pass my e-mail address to Ben.)

Machens is unconditionally included as one of the terminal points for this ride.

My bike was a road bike with 700x25 tires. Continental Gatorskins, I think. This time around, the bike will be shod with Schwalbe Durano Plus HS 399 700x25. I have yet to experience a flat with these tires.

Joey and her boyfriend took such good care of me, they fed me with no charge, I tried to pay them but to no avail. they gave me a tour and let me camp in their field for free, and take a shower. what wonderful people to help me in a time of need. next year im going to pay them a visit and make it up to them.

It's on South Providence - probably around 10 miles off the Katy Trail. Using Google maps get directions from McBaine, MO to
RP10,Columbia, MO. Be sure to select the biking directions or it will send you on the highway route.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 12/14/2012 12:26 PM
If you look on google maps it is just southwest of the Stadium/South Providence intersection. If you zoom on that area you will see a Hinkson Creek Trail coming off the MKT Trail. I assume you want Epple field. The area got the name because there is a low level reactor used for Mizzou's medical science test/experiments etc.

While work continues on the I-70 Blanchette Missouri River Bridge in St. Charles, cyclists and pedestrians on the Katy should watch for flaggers under the bridge starting today, December 13. There will be intermittent intervals of 15 minutes when trail traffic will be stopped while the bridge deck is removed overhead. These activities will go on for the next several weeks. The trail is open, but users should be prepared for potential 15 minute closures of the trail for safety reasons during the next few weeks.

Has this moved to near MU? Last I knew this was out at the corner of I-70 and 63. If so, it may be a stay by car but is not a short easy ride from the Katy by bike.

Trail Rider on 12/08/2012 07:56 AM
GM, does your hotel have a van to transport us over Rt 63 to either the MKT downtown or down to McBaine to get on the KT? Like the other post said, the hotel location is not real bike friendly.

Haank from New Haven, MO on 12/08/2012 09:08 AM
I've stayed in Columbia many times. By far the best bike location is Hampton Inn. The 70 / 63 cluster is not good at rush hour, or really any hour. There's a path / access road behind the Wal-Mart that gets you to Stephens Lake park. If you're trying to get downtown from 70 / 63 I'd suggest using this, you can see it on the aerials. Go through the park and then use Walnut to get to downtown area. Broadway into downtown is not fun.

Trek on 12/08/2012 09:57 AM
We've ridden Stadium Drive from the Martin Luther King trailhead to the motels on I-70 and won't again. There is too much traffic and too many hills that are not necessary to find lodging.

I've since ridden the spur to Flat Branch Park and then cut across campus to the Hampton Inn. Much easier. And there are several places to eat between Flat Branch and the Hampton.

Trail Rider on 12/08/2012 01:52 PM
For the Hampton Inn on campus isn't jumping on K to Providence Rd. from the KT pretty good too? Seems the MKT gets crowded pretty easily.

Road the KATY today (December 6) from Hermann (McKittrick) to St. Charles. Found the trail to be in good condition. Very quiet out there today. Only saw 6 other cyclists all day. Until I hit the outskirts of St. Charles, had only seen 3 walkers. The number of deer equaled the number of walkers.

Could have done without the slight breeze out of the east all afternoon, but for December...a great day.
