1 Ride West to East...ie. head down river, ok?
2 Don't plan on going to far each day with kids.
3 Hermann and Rocheport are really cool.
4 Consider parking in the STL area and using Amtrak to Jeff.
5 Start calling places along the way that show up here on this website.
6 Ask the innkeepers if they ride bikes, ask them if they have ridden the entire trail. Might suprise ya!
7 Talk to Rendleman in Bluffton. He has 3 bedrooms, a sleeping loft, overflow capable, and camping...and the old dude has ridden the entire trail and still rides a lot.
Good luck!

have you thought a bout doing the dnr ride in june and camp. if the kids ride the distants it would be a lot of fun. I have seen many familys on the ride and they sim to enjoy yhe ride

ArkyKenny on 01/07/2013 08:24 AM
You didn't mention how old your kids are, or their skill level, but if you have any reservations about their ability to ride, you should really consider some "Out and back" rides insted of going location to location.

Another option would be camping, and bringing your gear along in a trailer (as in one of those strollers that converts to a trailer--that could carry a tent and most if not all the gear). The trailer would slow you down enough to keep you riding all at the same speed, plus, there are lots of places to camp for little to no $.

elliott93 on 01/07/2013 03:04 PM
My kids are 12 and 17. They can ride, thats not the problem just trying to find loding for 4 is. Last time I rode Katy is was just the hubby and I. We are thinking of starting in St. Charles.

ArkyKenny on 01/07/2013 03:38 PM
In that case, I'd recommed "The Little House" in Marthasville, a 2 bedroom house with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, where you check in, they give you the keys, and they leave you alone. Great place that is 100 yards off the trail. When we stayed there, they charged us for the night, not for the number of people. Nothing fancy for breakfast (cereal and fruit) which made it perfect. Several good places to eat in Marthasville too if you want that.

Maybe ride St. Charles to Marthasville, out and back from Marthasville, then back to St. Charles, staying 2 nights in Marthasville?

FYI, make sure you bring plenty of food, water, and tubes with you on your way to McKittrick, because there is not much out there (but it is a great, remote part of the trail. The trail runs along ledges right on the river--very neat)

elliott93 on 01/07/2013 05:18 PM
Thanks! I will look into the house. I noticed on my first post I wrote I can afford which should be CANT!

Trevor on 01/07/2013 05:28 PM
There are also a couple B&Bs in Rocheport where you can get a family sized room/suite for reasonable cost. School House Inn, and Katy Trail Bed & Bikefest

Haank from New Haven, MO on 01/07/2013 07:16 PM
Don't forget about the hostel in Tebbetts. $5 per night! Bluffton can no doubt accomodate you. Klondike Park in Augusta has sleeper cabins that might work. Hermann and Jeff City has motels with double beds, as does Columbia via the MKT connection.

From St Chas I would try Klondike or Marthasville in day one, Hermann night two, Jeff City night three, Columbia night four, Boonville night five, Sedalia six and Clinton seven. That assumes you have time of course. But if on a budget I would think any of those stops could be done for $60 to $80, maybe $100 tops.

Thanks! Last time we stayed at the Schoolhouse, very neat place! I will check into the places mentioned.

Hello, Here at Joey's Birdhouse in McKittrick two rooms, right next to each other, on the trail are only $150 (even less during the week). Children are welcome. Each room has it's own small kitchen and private entrance.

Bike Rider from Kansas City on 01/09/2013 11:17 AM
We have traveled with large groups, riding on the Katy Trail for 2-3 days at a time. We have overnighted at hotels along the way. In Booneville there is a Comfort Inn that you can ride to from the trail. If you take the spur into Columbia, there are hotel options, too. In Jefferson City we stayed downtown at the Baymont Inn. We have also stayed at the Super 8 in Washington, MO, but needed a ride across the scary bridge. With a little bit of research, we were able to find lodging for our group, wich at times includes 14 riders. Good Luck!

Found a partial answer to my own question. There is a person who kept a page dedicated to those who have cycled the entire trail in a day or through-hiked it. Looks like 2 finishers on foot so far, according to the page. Actually one of those finishers did 1/2 the trip one year and the other 1/2 the next, so maybe only one "single-trip" through-hiker ever? Not sure about the post on the guys who supposedly ran the trail in 4.5 days pushing strollers of supplies. If anyone has any info. on this please post. I can't tell if the page hasn't been updated since 2008 or if there just hasn't been anyone else complete either feat since then.

Ray (webmaster) on 12/29/2012 10:57 PM
Sean, I am guessing that you're talking about this web page here on this website: http://www.bikekatytrail.com/one-day.aspx

No doubt others have hiked the trail, but I do not know who or how many.

In fact, I was surprised to see that nothing has been added to that page since 2008, because I'm sure a few people are doing single-day rides and full-trail hikes every year. It did not seem like four years since the last time I updated that web page.

Anyone out there who has biked the trail in one day or hiked it straight through, please drop me a line (via the Contact link at the bottom of the page) so I can list you along with the others who have accomplished these feats.

Anon on 12/30/2012 12:42 PM
I've seen several hikers on the Katy with backpacks and walking sticks; they could have been one-day'ers or nature lovers.

In 2009, I believe, two marathon runners jogged it as part of their cross-MO charity run. They pushed a large-wheel stroller carrying their supplies.

Anonymous on 01/01/2013 10:56 AM
Someone did slowly hike it all the way to Machens not long ago. He gave a vivid description of the 3-mile unfinished section toward Machens at the time.

Joey Los from McKittrick on 01/09/2013 09:45 AM
Pat Wendleton of Buy the Book (573-486-2722) in Hermann, Mo. hiked the trail several years ago. Contact her. I'm sure she'd share her information with you.

Don't know want that breaded stuff was - gar? Carp? Certainly wasn't. Catfish. Absolutely tasteless and chewy like jerky. Yuk!!! Noisy, smokey, rude waitress (though one of the other waitresses stepped in an was a jewel). Maybe it was a bad fish day but would NEVER recommend this place!

Jim from St. Thomas on 12/04/2012 05:40 PM
Ahhhhhhh.......another entry in Guess What Place I'm Talking Bad About. My guess is Dirty Joe's Noisy, Smokey, Rude Carp & Gar Shack.

Doug from Bluffton on 12/04/2012 06:20 PM
Come on Jim. Be more understanding of the marginally literate. If he can't remember his OWN name how can you possibly expect him to remember the name of the business?

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 12/05/2012 09:03 PM
Yum, Dirty Joe's Noisy, Smokey, Rude Carp and Gar Shack makes the best fish jerkey around. Really hits the spot after a long hard day of writing Katy Trail restaurant reviews.

Don on 12/06/2012 08:45 AM
You guys are funny. First word on reviews, location. Then you get it out of the way. Ray, set up a form for reviews where you can't submit comment unless you have location, please. Maybe its intentional? Think?

ArkyKenny on 12/06/2012 02:19 PM
Agreed. This type of post is the equivalent of "Butt dialing".

Russ from St Louis on 01/04/2013 01:53 PM
My guess is the OP is referring the Trailside in Rhineland although I would't agree with the negative review. I'll have to try Dirty Joe's.

Russ from St Louis on 01/04/2013 01:58 PM
I Googled Dirty Joes and it kept looping me back to this forum. Can anyone tell me where it's located?

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 01/05/2013 12:09 AM
Russ, Dirty Joe’s is located in the deep recesses of Jim’s mind sometimes referred to as the Twilight Zone. I would not advise your traveling there lest you not be able to return.

Anonymous on 01/05/2013 04:54 PM
Try searching with quotes, like this Russ, "Dirty Joe's Noisy, Smokey, Rude Carp & Gar Shack" instead of just searching for Dirty Joes. You should have better results.

Russ from St Louis on 01/07/2013 08:28 AM
Thanks. I think I fell for someone's tongue in cheek sense of humor. That's okay. A noisy, smokey and rude fish shack sounds like fun.

Anonymous on 01/07/2013 01:17 PM
You really thought there was a place called "Dirty Joe's Noisy, Smokey, Rude Carp & Gar Shack?" Sounds like your Kryptonite level is below the healthy level.

Russ from St Louis on 01/07/2013 02:31 PM
I'm not sure where my Kryptonite level is but just yesterday I ate lunch at a fish shack along the Illinois River. The
fried Catfish and onion rings were quite tasty. The place was not too noisy and not too smokey though since it was outside seating. Places like this are why I ride!

Hi Rob,
There is a marina in Potage that might not be a bad place to check out. They are pretty home grown and the owner lives in a house right near it. I think it would be best if you could go meet the people in person but they are nice folks! Hope this helps!

Hi everyone...

Wanted to share a writeup I am doing on our first end-to-end ride on the Katy. A buddy and I rode Clinton to Machens Weds Oct 10th thru Sat Oct 13th. We took tons of pictures and I'm finally just getting around to writing up the experience on my blog.

Here's the link for day one...the other days will be posted soon! If you've never been on the trail, hope this gives a little taste; if you have and know how awesome it is, hope this will bring back some cool memories.

I finally posted day two:

http://yeahthisistheone.wordpress.com/2012/10/27/katy-trail-2012-day-two-boonville-to-jefferson-city/

Days 3 & 4 will be along shortly.

Darrell from Jefferson City, Mo. on 10/28/2012 08:31 AM
Excellent work Bill! Looking forward to the others.

Jerry from Union, MO on 10/28/2012 09:42 AM
Very well done. I can hardly wait until spring to get to finish riding the entire trail both ways. Your writing and pictures are a real inspiration. Thanks.

Bill P from Ottawa, KS on 10/28/2012 01:01 PM
Thanks very much for the kind words guys!

Day 3 is posted:

http://yeahthisistheone.wordpress.com/2012/10/28/katy-trail-2012-day-three-jefferson-city-to-washington-2/

I *hope* to get day 4 posted by tonight. If not, it'll be in the next day or so.

Bill P from Ottawa, KS on 10/28/2012 08:17 PM
Day four (final day, in to Machens) is posted:

http://yeahthisistheone.wordpress.com/2012/10/28/katy-trail-2012-day-four-washington-to-machens/

Thanks for stopping in and having a read, guys.

Cannot wait to ride the trail again in 2013! :)

Jerry - do you mean that in spring you'll ride the full trail and then back? Or do you mean you'll ride in the opposite direction from what you've previously done?

My buddy and I are considering whether we want to ride Machens-to-Clinton in 2013 or repeat the same direction from this year, Clinton-to-Machens.

S Strayhorn from Beebe, AR on 01/01/2013 06:28 PM
I want to ride the trail in 2013. What kind of bike did you use? I have a 29er MTB.

MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 01/02/2013 03:33 PM
I have rode the KATY end to end several times on my 29er. Just switch to a smaller semi-slick tire, you wont need the heavy knobbies. I use 38-42c touring or cyclocross tires.

Anonymous on 01/03/2013 09:41 PM
Good advise in my opinion on narrower tires without the nobs. I've ridden it across several times on 28s. I know several on here think those are too narrow, but they work great for me. I love extra tough/flat-resistant tires on the KATY because I hate changing flats!
Enjoy.

Go up to the "Columbia" city on the top of this page. Click it. Then go down to the "trail map" click it and voila there you have it. All points on the MKT. You are quite welcome.

Paulie from Knoxville on 01/03/2013 09:18 AM
Its starts in Downtown Columbia and ends on the Katy a between Huntdale and McBaine.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 01/03/2013 12:17 PM
It ends near the intersection of South 4th Street and Locust (not far from the Flat Branch Restaurant).
