Russ, Dirty Joe’s is located in the deep recesses of Jim’s mind sometimes referred to as the Twilight Zone. I would not advise your traveling there lest you not be able to return.

Try searching with quotes, like this Russ, "Dirty Joe's Noisy, Smokey, Rude Carp & Gar Shack" instead of just searching for Dirty Joes. You should have better results.

I'm not sure where my Kryptonite level is but just yesterday I ate lunch at a fish shack along the Illinois River. The
fried Catfish and onion rings were quite tasty. The place was not too noisy and not too smokey though since it was outside seating. Places like this are why I ride!

Hi Rob,
There is a marina in Potage that might not be a bad place to check out. They are pretty home grown and the owner lives in a house right near it. I think it would be best if you could go meet the people in person but they are nice folks! Hope this helps!

OK after a quick check on Google, I beleive he is talking about the bur oak at McBaine (the big tree) and yes the John Sam Williamson family does own the land on which the tree stands.

Hi everyone...
Wanted to share a writeup I am doing on our first end-to-end ride on the Katy. A buddy and I rode Clinton to Machens Weds Oct 10th thru Sat Oct 13th. We took tons of pictures and I'm finally just getting around to writing up the experience on my blog.
Here's the link for day one...the other days will be posted soon! If you've never been on the trail, hope this gives a little taste; if you have and know how awesome it is, hope this will bring back some cool memories.

Jerry - do you mean that in spring you'll ride the full trail and then back? Or do you mean you'll ride in the opposite direction from what you've previously done?
My buddy and I are considering whether we want to ride Machens-to-Clinton in 2013 or repeat the same direction from this year, Clinton-to-Machens.

I have rode the KATY end to end several times on my 29er. Just switch to a smaller semi-slick tire, you wont need the heavy knobbies. I use 38-42c touring or cyclocross tires.

Good advise in my opinion on narrower tires without the nobs. I've ridden it across several times on 28s. I know several on here think those are too narrow, but they work great for me. I love extra tough/flat-resistant tires on the KATY because I hate changing flats!

Go up to the "Columbia" city on the top of this page. Click it. Then go down to the "trail map" click it and voila there you have it. All points on the MKT. You are quite welcome.

According to the mileage chart above it is 6.2 miles from Greens Bottom to the St Charles trailhead.

There is a seperate bike/pedestrian lane at the Page Avenue bridge that will dump you out on the Katy at MM 43. However, that is about a 14 mile urban hike to Creve Coeur park and this bridge from the Amtrak station in Kirkwood. If you are somewhat flexible with your schedule, then I think you could get a shuttle in Clinton and get to St. Charles for $50-$60. You can look at/utilize the "Share a Shuttle" link on this site's home page to work that out. This same home page also has links to the Katy hikes that Bonnie mentions under trip reports that were done by a couple of different individuals a few years back.

Sam, the entire Katy trail is 237 miles long. Divide how many miles a day you feel comfortable riding into the distance you want to travel. I like to take 3 days and ride 70+ per day.

A leisurely 5 days at 40 to 50 miles a day works! Taking in the sights and visiting with people makes it a more enjoyable trip, IMO.

I've done it a few times in 3. Clinton-Boonville. Boonville-Rhineland. Rhineland-St. Charles.
Ride back to Hermann on day 4 and catch Amtrak back to Kansas City (home).
