We are planning a trip this fall and spending a couple of days in Hermann. As I look at the maps, I'm trying to figure out where might be the best place to stay that is centrally located by the majority of shops, wineries and restaurants. Any suggestions?? I'd like somewhere that serves a full breakfast and has a hot tub. Any one?? Also where to eat?? Thanks in advance!!

jp from st. louis on 07/23/2008 05:39 PM
My wife and I stayed at Esther's Ausblich several years ago, and it was a fantastic B&B. Esther had a basket with cheeses, grapes, and some excellent local wine waiting for us, per my wife's request. It is located close to the trail,up on a bluff. We watched fireworks one night. It is centrally located by all the shops and restaurants. There was a hot tub also. Now to the breakfast; it was fantastic, and a lot of locally farmed fruits and vegetables were used. She made the best quiche I've ever had. I think that you should be aware that Hermann gets real busy in october because of the festivities of octoberfest; so I would not waste any time in finding a place to stay if I were you. Enjoy Hermann, it is a beautiful town, and everyone I have ever encountered there was old world lifestyle.

Trek on 07/23/2008 07:24 PM
We've stayed several times at Hermann Hill and seem to migrate back to it. The B & B is up on the hill on the west side of town, west of Stone Hill and the cottages are a short distance east of down town. Their web addy is www.hermannhill.com. It's the real deal and surely won't disappoint.

m from St. Louis on 07/24/2008 08:08 AM
I'll second the Herman Hill recommendation. It's a bit more expensive but it is absolutely 5-star. The cottages (mis-named as they are) are a great place to spend July 4th so you have the direct view of the fireworks. You have a hot tub on the deck (with privacy), a large jacuzzi inside and one of those fancy showers inside as well. Very spacious, simply the best of the best. The food is excellent even at the cottages where it is a little more manual (they put more than enough in the fridge with instructions on how to cook things they've pre-made for you). You'll want to get on the same-time-next-year plan like we did.

We stayed at the Hermann Motel this week. Very nice for the price and super clean. If your looking for a nice clean place to stay at an affordable price this is it!!! If your looking for a B&B experience they you might look elsewhere.

cls from eastern mo on 06/21/2009 05:45 PM
Neufeld-Davies ROCKS! It's not the prettiest from the street, but the inside is lovely and the food and the hospitality was awesome!! We had our own private deck, own bathrooms with showers and felt very comfortable there.

cunninghamair from O''''''''Fallon, MO on 06/21/2009 08:55 PM
We stayed at Captain Wohl's (just be sure to request an early check in when you make the

reservation). We had a hot tub and an amazing breakfast (including sausage locally made).

Walking distance the bike shop, one of the wineries and a really good pub recommended by

the B&B. Not centrally located (closer to the river) but I would recommend it.

Riding to Kansas City
 -  + Hello,

Hello,

I'd like to bicycle from St. Louis to Kansas City, with as much of my ride as possible being

on the Katy Trail. I know the trail doesn't go all the way to KC, though. Can anyone

suggest at what point I should leave the trail, and what route I would take from there to

get to KC? According to MapQuest, the point on the trail closest to KC is Green Ridge,

which would mean not seeing the Windsor-Calhoun-Clinton legs of the trail.

-Ken

You might want to check out these maps out at the MODOT website. They show which roads have at least a four foot shoulders for biking. They also have a daily traffice volume on them. For instance you can leave Clinton on route 7 and then take route 71 all the way into KC. It says its got a 4 foot shoulder, however the traffic on these roads moves very fast.

http://www.modot.org/othertransportation/bike_ped/Bike-PedProgram--RoadandRouteInfo.htm

There is also the discovery trail that connects Boonville to KC. It is a combo of gravel and paved roads. I have never been on it though.

http://www.discoverytrail.org/

If you main goal is the Katy and not neccessaily KC, then I would bike right to Clinton, spend the night and then bike back to Sedalia and catch the train back. Its going to be 70 miles of hard busy roads to get to KC.

Ken Gagne from Worcester on 06/10/2009 01:46 PM
It never occurred to me to take a train for the last leg. Thanks! I was hoping to complete a

pan-Missouri bike ride, but the backtracking you suggest would add up to almost the same

mileage. Besides, I won't be starting right at St. Louis, anyway.

jd from gkc on 06/10/2009 04:48 PM
If a pan-MO ride is your goal, it's about as easy to enjoy the trail all the way to Clinton, and then take Hwy-7 over to Harrisonville where you can cut across to the western border via paved backroads south of KC rather than thru the busy parts of it. Some riders take Hwy-50 out of Sedalia because they want to go into the city itself. Many tree-tunnels and canopies cover the Katy between Sedalia and Clinton not to mention the scads of small wildlife. Enjoy? :) :)

jd from gkc on 06/11/2009 09:58 AM
Post Script: you can probably make it to the old Hwy-2 from Green Ridge okay!

roadwarrior from opks on 06/21/2009 06:55 PM
today I rode my motorcycle to hiway 2 and rode all the way to Clinton. 13 too much fast traffic with a 3 foot shoulder stay off 13 but hi w 2 is do able just go too windsor.on Sunday theirs not much traffic out.Something else to think about once you get south of harrisonville theres very few places to get water so you need to stock up when you can.Ive been contemplating this ride for a while its a challenge i'm going too get in shape and give a try in the fall.

We were greeted warmly by Kate and breakfast was made by Perry the next day (out of this world!). We joked with him about the large amount of food he prepared for us and pointed out that there WERE only 4 of us in the group...we at it all! Simply delicious.

The rooms were lovely and comfortable and we had our own bathrooms with showers and the beds were wonderfully cozy. It's off the trail across the river in town, but definitely worth the effort to get there!

I've been taught not to say anything if I couldn't say something nice but this is definitely a time to give everyone a fair warning - especially if you're looking for a B&B experience. If you want privacy, this is NOT the place for you. We're laughing about it now, but at the time, it was not a pleasant experience and we couldn't get out of there fast enough!

If you are looking for a wonderful meal on the trail this is the place. Plenty of seating inside and a patio area when weather is nice. Food was amazing. Her special that day was a chicken quesadilla that I am tempted to drive back to have again, along with the Spicy corn chowder soup. Nice choice of wines to also have with your meal. Only downside is during the week if it is really slow they may close early. We were there during the middle of the week and another couple stated they were closed about a hour early that doy. Maybe call before heading up the hill but worth the ride for sure.

If you dig around on this site, you may find some of the horror stories that were going around about this place. When I stayed there about two years ago I found it to be maybe a little wierd but ok. The room was clean, the hottub was a bonus and it was fairly CHEAP. I can't comment about breakfast cause I was long gone at sunrise.

I did my first Katy ride last week and loved it. I didn't get to ride the entire trail due to my husbands health problems, but I would like to try again. I have more vacation time in October and would love to ride and see the fall colors. How safe is the trail during the first couple of weeks in October. I saw signs about hunting but wondered if anything has ever happened?

Trek on 06/19/2009 08:10 AM
Mostly bittersweet, paw paw, and persimmon hunting going on in October. Usually mid October is prime fall color time.

troy ratliff from jonesboro, ar on 06/19/2009 03:39 PM
I've biked the KATY several times during October and have never had any problems with hunters. In my opinion October is the absolute best time to be on the KATY.

cunninghamair from O'Fallon, MO on 06/20/2009 06:28 PM
I've seen hunters walk across the trail on their way out to the fields--but never had any

problems. They are aware of the trail (illegal to fire within 100 ft of the trail?). But I wear

high-vis yellow just to be safe.

Agree with everything said above BUT, PLEASE get OFF the trail to enjoy

this business. People and their children standing in the middle of the

trail have made this a VERY dangerous location. Recently we had to walk through a mob of adults and at least 10 children then when I clipped in to continue, a mother with a child on a trail a bike pulled in front of me and stopped, blocking the trail!!!
