Just wanted to give a shout-out to two places in Hermann. The Wurst House had great food and will let you leave your stuff there. We took our phones and wallets but left bags while we checked out Hermann. We had time to kill before catching the train and we happened across a coffee place - just across from the Wurst House and a block east ( Expresso Lane ? can't remember exact name) They were so friendly and had nice comfy chairs and lots of board games to play for a fun way to pass the time, computer to use, and great coffee. Nice restrooms.

Two of the best places in Hermann IMO. I also like the Save-A-Lot (across from Wurst Haus) for cheap everything.

Three of us stayed at Joey's Birdhouse in the beginning of October - we loved it! Rich drove us into Hermann to see our beloved Broncos and Joey made us the best meal we had along the trail - a hot breakfast to die for.
Joey also rounded up an old set of pedals for my brother's bike since he broke his fancy cleats. Our stay with Joey and Rich was one of the highlights of our trip - right off the trail and such a comforting break.

My wife and I stayed in the cottage next to Doug's house where he provided for our every need. Doug went out of his way to provide a place to stay that was more than just a hot shower and a comfortable bed. He made every effort to create an experience with all of the delicious food, the bonfire, and sharing his home in general, as if it were a responsibility to humanity! I hope to see again next year and have the opportunity to see his record collection a little more in depth. Thanks for an amazing experience.

Too many spiders in my room at the Rendleman B&B and air conditioner did not work. Not clean! Doug was very friendly but if cleanliness matters at all to you, skip this place.

from Wikipedia...grin...While the venom of a few species is dangerous to humans, scientists are now researching the use of spider venom in medicine and as non-polluting pesticides. Spider silk provides a combination of lightness, strength and elasticity that is superior to that of synthetic materials, and spider silk genes have been inserted into mammals and plants to see if these can be used as silk factories. As a result of their wide range of behaviors, spiders have become common symbols in art and mythology symbolizing various combinations of patience, cruelty and creative powers.....now from me...spiders have been here longer than we have...I've never found Doug's to be "unclean"...maybe he just doesn't support all the Monsanto chemicals...I think he's more of a beer and honey kind of guy!

Our buddies at hotel rescue have extensive research on public opinions and a majority of the hotel staying public say they will not return to a hotel or book at the same chain if the hotel is not clean. I believe B&B owners do not have that perception since they believe it is a private home to them whether the spider venom is beneficial or not. Any comments are welcomed.

I have always enjoyed my stay at Doug's. I visit him 4 or 5 times a year. Tons of Great food and the company is even better. Yes, it is a 150 year old farm house, but it is clean and has home brew beer! It's not a 4 star hotel but then neither are his prices.
Great place that caters to cyclists!

We stayed here last week thanks to the suggestion of a fellow cyclist. We'd made reservations at a chain hotel and switched to Hotel Bothwell and so glad we did.
We had one large room with a second bedroom which was great for our party of four. The staff was amazing and very attentive. They even let you keep your bike in the room if you want.
These folks treat cyclists like royalty and even give riders a discounted rate through the end of Oct. If we ever get back to Sedalia, we'll definitely go back here.
Great customer service!

Stayed here for a weekend ride to Boonville. Owners are doing some rehab work, but rooms are clean and efficient for a good night's rest before a day of cycling. No continental Breakfast or cable TV, but for $43 one can't ask for much more. Would definitely stay here again. Word of warning to Verizon customers: Verizon coverage is spotty to non existent in town, so contacting the owners was a bit of a challenge for us.

Awesome. Congratulations and thank you to the owners for creating another resource along the wonderful KATY. Best wishes with this venture.

My dad and I completed the whole trail last September (2012) from Clinton to Machens. The Crossroads motel was our first nights stay. Very clean, comfortable and smoke free. For the price it was the best deal on the trail. Highly recommend.

My friend and I stayed here last week and found it clean and comfy with fast internet. The owners were very friendly and you can't beat the price.

I highly recommend Joey’s Birdhouse as an overnight stay in McKittrick. This past week was our first experience on the KATY trail and Joey’s was a definite highlight for us. The room was convenient, clean, and comfortable. Joey is an energetic and creative woman who freely shared her garden, her knowledge, her conversation, and her enthusiasm for McKittrick and the trail with us. She and Rich provided a regular haven for two tired cyclists. We will definitely make Joey’s Birdhouse a planned stop the next time we travel the KATY.

Don't cut yourself short. There is alot to experience in Hermann a very short distance away.
Rich Lauer from Hermann on 10/05/2013 11:19 AM
You Know;
There hundreds of beds in Hermann. High to low in cost and service.
I would like to think when "staying the trail" is desired over touring the city, the trail accommodation offer the same amenities as the big city Hermann. Meyer's, Joey's and now the Merck offer inexpensive rooms, cottages and now the largest b&b room in Missouri.\
Which brings about another quandary: What is an anonymous and does anyone really lend credibility to an entity that is so negative.

I don't know Rich. Maybe it was just someone with a financial interest in getting riders across the river. To give them credit, they were positively being jerks about it.
Rich Lauer from Hermann on 10/05/2013 08:26 PM
Hey Doug;
I live in Hermann, shop in Hermann,ran for mayor in Hermann last year and again in 2014. I an trying to build the first cycleport in Hermann,so I have interest in Hermann.
I also have common sense enough to know that there are many types of riders with a variety of interests. I have steered borders to Hermann if they want to tour the city and winerys. If they are doing the larger part of the trail I assist them on staying the trail and on task. Healthy food water and skip the heavy drinking. I am allowed to do this. I think there is an ordinance here stating this. I will ask Mayor Joey for confirmation.
Have a great week Doug

Rich, looks to me that Doug was supporting you. This forum is about the trail. Hermann is Hermann...not the trail...just sayin'..keep the rubber side down.
Rich Lauer from Hermann on 10/05/2013 10:28 PM
Hobo;
stop by sometime to see what we have done here. We are going to negotiate with DNR at Mckittrick trail head to build a first class or second class campground where the old grainery buildings are to be removed. Not the tower. This too will enhance mile 100.8
Hope to see you

Doug from Bluffton on 10/06/2013 09:08 AM
My point Rich, was that anon and others have a right to talk well of Hermann and try to bring business there but not by stepping on well deserved comments about You and Joey or other businesses on this side of the river. That's when they become Jerks.
Jim from St Thomas on 10/06/2013 02:58 PM
Rich, I hope you can get DNR to put in a campground. I talked to them about doing the same thing on land that they already own adjacent to the JC trailhead but the response was that the trail closes from dusk to dawn so any campsite would technically illegal. Hopefully, since the site you're talking about is outside of the trail boundary, you might have better luck.
Rich Lauer from Hermann on 10/06/2013 05:48 PM
All's well
I think it could be said we all love the trail and appreciate the company that comes down it.
Best to all of you!

Joey's Birdhouse is a definite repeat for our future trail rides. Clean, comfortable private room/bath with WiFi, hand-written notes welcoming us, cookies on table and cold drinks in the fridge to boot. Owners of this B&B are a wonderful couple who epitomize what the Katy Trail is all about. Joey's Birdhouse with Hermann just 2 miles across the river makes McKittrick a must-stop.
