I usually ride out from St. Charles and I have noticed a lot of people parking along the trail on Greens Bottom Road. Why don't peole use the parking area at Greens Bottom Trail Head? It seems that the continuos parking along the trail is causing some erosion problems that are dangerous and are probably a headache for the maintenance staff to keep up with. It's also dangerous when people park cars so that the bumbers are sticking out into the trail. I was passing a group of riders in that section and a car bumber almost caused a huge wreck. Is it even legal to park there? It seems as if they are probably driving in an unauthorized area.

You need to take some spelling and grammar lessons.

Anonymous on 07/05/2011 06:44 PM
Is the parking area labeled clearly? I am planning a trip there soon, and I'm hoping I can find the trailhead easily. Ben, I hope I spelled correctly for you as I'm sure annonymous just made a typo which I'm sure you've never made. Be nice.

The lot is very easy to spot (East side of the road). Nice place to start/stop your KATY visit.

people have always parked along greens bottom...some of those spots are from people parking to walk over to the caves right across the katy
Max from stl on 02/09/2012 12:58 PM
Those parking spots are closer to the nice, shaded parts of the trail. The trailhead is on the exposed part of the trail, away from the scenic parts.
merkin4 from St. Peters MO on 02/16/2012 04:07 PM
There are caves there? Serious? That sounds pretty cool. Might have to drag the child out there. Wouldn't happen to be through that wide orange gate, would it? I've seen some teenagers in that area, but never knew what they were doing.

The Katy Trail website notes the normalcy of renting a car one way from St. Louis to Sedalia to pick up on the western end of the Trail but I have found dead end after dead end besides shelling about $200 for a U-haul (and it doesn't even offer the cheaper pick-ups and cargo vans one way). Any help or tips would be wonderful if anyone has done this before! We are planning on going in June of '12 with a Tandem. Thanks in advance to rubber tramps and the like!
Anon on 02/13/2012 11:55 AM
As I recall, not many known rental outlets exist in Clinton if any. In addition, any one-way rental costs more because the rental company has to have the vehicle driven back to it starting point, usually from one its own outlets.
You might look into using Amtrak instead. You might have to backtrack or bike-ride to a train station depending on which direction you're going. But it's much cheaper! Good luck.
Trek on 02/13/2012 01:04 PM
Amtrak won't take a tandem unless it is taken as baggage. If you've got couplers and can find a way to deal with your cases/boxes and packing the train may work. It may be easier to try a shuttle to take you to Sedalia.
We enjoy our tandem, but logistically it is not always the bike of choice.
Colorado Riders from Fruita, CO on 02/13/2012 01:23 PM
Last fall we stayed at Lococo House in St. Charles. It was a very nice place and reasonable. While we did not use their shuttle service, I know that they do shuttle bikes and riders. You might want stay there a night and check to to see if they can accommodate a tandem shuttle. They are great folks!

Start up at Matchens and stay at I The Little House in Marthasville. It is 150 yards off the trail in the middle of town near a pizza place, a cafe, a bar, etc. It is listed as a B&B, but it is not the type of B&B I'm used to: It is 2 bedroom house with a stocked kitchen for breakfast, hot running water with a great bathtub, a comfortable bed, cable TV, and no hosts to entertain you. Check in, pay your $ and she leaves you alone. AWESOME! No offense to all you traditional hosted B&B's out there, but I'm just one of those guys who doesn't need, or want to be served or hosted--so this place is right up my alley. If that is your style too, stay at The Little House in Marthasville.
Anonymous on 02/13/2012 12:51 AM
I totally agree with you. I respect people who like a traditional American B&B and all that (what I consider) overdone attention, but I am not one of them. Thanks for the post. I'll keep the place in mind.

Hello to all you wonderful Bicyclists out there! This is going to be a great year for riding! And the High Street Victorian B&B is ready for you! You will find safe and secure place for your bikes, as well as a wonderful garden to relax in. We have ice cold beverages and home made cookies for you when you arrive! We have throughly enjoyed meeting all those who rode the trail and stayed here in years past. Bicyclists are an awesome group of folks and we look forward to hosting you all this year!

This a great place to stay when your trip allows for a Boonville stay. The location near the trail, casino, and main street make this a very reasonable nights stay. An all around great place to stay for the traveling cyclist.

Planning a Spring trip with my three sons and wanting to camp along the way. I used the Trip Planner tool here, but when I drove out to Marthasville and Portland, the indicated campgrounds didn't seem to exist.
How often is the Trip Planner updated?
Can anyone suggest good campgrounds between Defiance and Jefferson City?
MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 02/09/2012 02:52 PM
We have camped at:
Klondike Park in Augusta
Steamboat Junction in Bluffton
Rivers Edge in Portland
and stayed at the Turner Shelter Hostel in Tebbets.
Jim from St Thomas on 02/09/2012 03:43 PM
What do you mean by they didn't seem to exist? The camping in Marthasville is at the community park right across the trailhead. The campground at Portland is right above the trailhead.
gene from Indiana on 02/10/2012 11:54 AM
The campsites you mentioned are there. Marthasville has two campsites. The city owns the area with the old replica cabin. It is free to camp there. Across the street is the sports complex/ball field. The fee for camping there is $5 (in 2010) each. A man owns the facility and will charge you $5 even if you camp in the city park but use his restrooms and showers. The showers are hot but you have to run the water for a while.
At Portland, the campsites are above the trail and are fairly good. The cost is $10. The small bath/shower facility is kept in good shape. If you camp at Portland, take snacks for breakfast or eat later. The Riverfront Bar and Restaurant doesn't open until 11:00 AM (I think)

There are bathrooms/water at St. Charles riverfront which is about 3.5 miles north of 364. There are plenty of gas stations and other services along Highway 94 as well, which is just west of the Page/364 bridge.

There is a new gas station at the South West corner of Page and Upper Bottom/River Road. Restrooms available and drinks/snacks available for purchase. About 1/2 mile away from lot to the west.

the Riverfront restaurants aren't usually crowded on a weekday, not to mention you were there after NORMAL lunch hours so seeing empty tables is normal. Try going in for dinner, a local game on tv, or for their night life...atmosphere is awesome.

We stayed at Eloyse's B & B in June of 2010. We would not recommend it. First off the place smelled like a cat box and there were so many nick knacks in the bedroom we had no place to put our personal belongings. In addition, the owners had a domestic argument at 2 AM, which woke us up.

I e-mailed MO DNR about the date. There is no "offical" date set yet. But in the past it's the first Monday after Fathers day. So it should be June 18 to 22

No decision to start at Machens this year? Its at the end like Clinton but with no real good trailhead access. Also just a slight typo on the MO DNR sight for this years ride. Its June 2012 not 2011.
Dawn Fredrickson, Katy Trail Coordinator on 02/06/2012 11:24 AM
Thanks for catching the error! We'll get it corrected. We were debating how to include Machens but, as you say, it's logistically difficult. Additionally, Frontier Park in St. Charles is a great venue to begin the ride. We may try to include a pre-ride to Machens and back on Sunday, June 17. Check the Katy Ride web page periodically for updates. Thanks.
