Most of the time you can show up and stay - the key is on the utility pole next to the shelter. The shelter is seldom completely full but it does occasionally happen so if you want to check before your stay you can use the reservation form here - https://www.conservemo.org/reservation-form.html
or call the office - 573-634-2322 ext 101

Thanks to the volunteers who help make it work.

My son and I stayed there last week. It was a nice respite from the storm that night. Met some other bikers going through. Big storm that night (heard tornados touched down) and there was water pouring in various spots. Through the 2nd floor roof through onto the floor into the 1st floor and places where bikes are stored. Not much we could do but put some buckets out. You pay by honor system and put it in post office next store. It is a such a treasure to have that on the trail I hope they can continue to do repairs and keep it open! Jim next door is very friendly and I can see he checks in from time to time to be sure things are ok there. He even showed us his collection of Model T's and baked a pizza for us just to be a trail angel. Good people abound! I did lose my daughter's favorite Nalgene water bottle there. Oh boy...going to be hard to replace that with all her adventure stickers.
Jim from St Thomas on 11/02/2021 05:41 PM
Thanks for putting the buckets out. The storm blew some shingles off the roof. Got it patched on Sunday so all is good.

In response to Critters in the walls. When I stayed there last may I happened to be the only person there one night. At some time during the early morning hours I could hear a loud scratching noise coming from the left side of the front door. Then whatever it was either a racoon or opossum climbed up the inside of the wall and across the ceiling above my bunk. I looked around the building to investigate but could find nothing. I did not go upstairs though.

This is the third time I've stayed at Katy Junction B&B over the past few years, and what a great place and great host. Got in late due to a flat at MP 206, but Jerry graciously returned to the B&B as I dragged my sorry self into Pilot Grove. Lots of great conversation, a good night's sleep and a great breakfast. Jerry provided a wonderful perspective on the area and the types of Katy Trail travelers (at least those who transit Pilot Grove), all of which enabled me to see the KT in a new and more expansive way. A real ambassador for the trail, a real treasure for cyclists and Missouri.
MaryAnn from IL on 11/02/2021 01:34 PM
My son and I were just finishing 140 miles of biking & camping the trail. We were treating ourselves a night at a B & B as the storms were plentiful! Katy Junction was just the place! Jerry was SO friendly and accommodating! My son had mentioned he liked chocolate milk, and at breakfast Jerry provided chocolate milk just for Jimmy! He as a wealth of information for local things to do, history and fun stories. His place was homey and we felt very comfortable. I would definitely recommend Katy Junction to others! We hope to return! He offers more such all you need to do is ask. Enjoy the ride!

I am curious what, if any, activity has begun on tearing out the old bridge and beginning the new construction and what impact that is having, or will have, on the ability to use to low water crossing. I could easily see that construction might put the crossing out of commission, to keep people out of the way of heavy machinery.

I just saw a posting by MoDOT that there is a free bridge available in Livingston Co MO. I say send it to Salt Creek. Check out the site. www.modot.org/free-bridges
JT from TERRE HAUTE on 10/27/2021 08:32 PM
Rode through the short detour on 10/23/21. Worried that work on the removal of the old bridge would impact the ability to use the low water detour, but as far as I could tell everything was exactly the same as when I came through in the middle of July. The old bridge didn't look like it had been touched.
Gigantor from Colorado Springs from Colorado Springs on 10/31/2021 12:02 PM
My lifelong buddy from Florida and I rode from Boonville east on a beautiful, cool, low humidity day October 21. We rode too far on the gravel road past the low water crossing and I flatted, so we decided to bite the bullet and take the narrow highway detour. Fortunately we saw the low water crossing as we crossed on the highway bridge and turned around. We are glad we did because we had a great time riding east that day, including some fall colors and the tunnel.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/29/2021 08:16 PM
It depends on what kind of city riding you enjoy. I personally like to take multiple routes combining trail segments, sidewalk segments, subdivision cut-throughs, etc...but some people don't enjoy those types of routes and would rather have the straightest route even it involves a two lane road with no shoulders. That is fine for urban road biking, but not a fun way to wrap up a Katy Trail adventure. There is also a good option that allows you to take a bus route to the Kirkwood train station. All St. Louis Metro buses have bike racks on the front. If you let me know what kind of route you prefer, then I would be happy to share a mapped route with you. Unfortunately the routes are not that easy because several areas of western St. Louis County love their gated communities and cul-de-sacs so you have to avoid those residential dead ends and the busy streets at the same time.

There is a trail closure on the Rock Island Spur between Medford and Chilhowee, west of Highway P intersection. Can't be more specific, since I didn't know until I got there (10/24/21). Didn't find any notices on the MO State Parks site, and am not from the area, so it was kind of a surprise. It looked like a culvert washout. Heavy equipment on trail. No detour posted and couldn't quite pinpoint the location. Riders from Medford to Chilhowee (or reverse) should be aware. Thanks.
madununibomer from op on 10/28/2021 02:59 PM
how many miles past medford did you just turn around and go back is it possible walk thru thanks for the heads up.probily could find a deture by riding on highway 2 was ooking onn google maps didnt see a p intersection.
CurtM-FTW from Fort Worth TX on 10/28/2021 09:29 PM
I was incorrect about the location of the closure. It's EAST of the Medford TH, closer to Medford than Chilhowee. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be the crossing with SW 971 Road. It was a surprise and I should have noted the location better. But with the rain and all that, wanted to keep going. I did see what must have been HW 2 curving south, so that would be my guess. I drove HW 2 a couple of times a few years ago; it would be poor choice for cycling. I did walk the bike through; it was Sunday. Pretty loose fill and you have to maneuver around the heavy equipment. You'll have to empty your shoes.

The stretch from Weldon Springs to Defiance is probably the least interesting section of trail. If you have a way to drive west some and start in Defiance or Augusta, I'd recommend that.
JT from TERRE HAUTE on 10/28/2021 06:12 PM
Depends what you're hoping for: from St. Charles to Defiance there's not much to do, but once you get to Defiance and on to Augusta there's several options for breweries and wineries and bar and grill type places (depending on the day of the week, I'd definitely check to see what's open on what days of the week). Just finished a ride from Clinton to Machens on 10/26 and had a great lunch at Terry and Kathy's in Defiance on 10/26. In the long run I'd say; make your plans and then ride!

Bathrooms will be locked, or have been in the past. However, some will or might, have Johnnys next to them. YES! Carry extra water and a way to keep it warm, so that it is not ice when you need it. You will find Gas Stations, of course, for hot beverages and a lot of 'Regulars' who use the trail all year. Snow? Maybe. When it does, we get out our FATTYs and or Skis or Snowshoes, we use the trail ALL year. We grab Umbrellas when it rains.

The Turner Katy Shelter/Hostel in Tebbetts usually stays open until after Thanksgiving, then they winterize it until the following spring. That is a great place to stay inside for a night not having to set up the tent. Beyond that, you want to map out city parks and major campgrounds that tend to stay open in November versus the trailheads.

I haven't biked the Katy since 2017. But when I did bike it I used to carry some mace spray. They make very small cannisters for joggers to carry, or you can put it on your keychain. I got it in the sports departments of stores. Once in a while I would see 2 or more dogs on the trail. But none bothered me and I never had to use it.
When will you be doing your trip? You will see an occasional snake, but leave them alone and they won't bother you.
It's the most incredible trail. You'll love it.

Black Bear hunting zones are all south of the Missouri River (one was already gotten in Zone 1 - way south). Bear scat and tracks were found around the Columbia, Mo area but I have not heard of actual sightings. While seeing lots of wildlife on the trail, I have never seen any that have been a problem. Just a beautiful moment to watch. There have been a couple encounters with dogs, but that has been rare. Enjoy! It will be great!

We lived in N WI for several years.....we know what Bear Scat looks like. Are we sure it WAS Bear Scat? We did not see the Bear. But it had to be about a 70 pound Raccoon or one HECK of a Raccoon Party it had gone to, to have been left by a Raccoon. Not formed like Coyote. So????? Mysteries.

Had a great 2.5 day ride this week (Oct 18-20). Here are some highlights and comments for those touring in the future:
1. Riding on Monday/Tuesday presents risk of finding many business closed. I will choose different days next time.
2. Great lodging experience with the Globe Hotel in Hartsburg (again) and Kim's Cabins in Windsor.
3. Riding East to West is great until you reach Booneville and I had no idea until looked at my Strava data how much elevation gain is experienced in that next 75 mile stretch. For anyone doing that stretch - definitely recommend West to East route!
4. I've never rode through Sedalia before and will not again. Surely there are plans to route Katy around all of that?
5. I will never ride Amtrak again - 4 hour delay on Sunday with very few updates provided. I went from Lee's Summit to Washington and then rode back to Clinton.
6. The experience of nature, solitude and the rural landscape is always better than expected.
7. My fourth trip on the Katy and definitely not my last.
Planning a group ride next fall - Probably going to go Booneville to Hermann
Jerry Whittle from Belleville on 10/21/2021 04:42 PM
Actually the ride though Sedalia used to be much worse with a lot more of it on the road. The new part of the trail is better but the signage on the roads could be better. There are a lot of intersections to cross on busy streets, but it's not dangerous if you are careful.
Bill in Houston from Houston on 10/25/2021 04:54 PM
Awww, Sedalia isn't that bad.
But finding a place open on Sunday or Monday can be tricky!

-  + Highly recommend these cool and comfortable cabins right off the trail. Good access for both Katy and Rock Island Cyclists. Windsor also has some cool small town locations for food.

I am currently stranded in Windsor and need to get to Clinton tomorrow where my car is parked. I am not finding Ubers, taxis, etc. anyone have any ideas? I can leave my bike behind and come back to get it since it’s just 16 miles if needed.

BIG shoutout to Kim at Kim's Cabins. She came to my rescue. Not only did she give me a lift when I desperately needed it she was an absolute delight to visit with. You can tell she lives and breathes the trails and it shows! I learned to many things I did not know.
Next time I come up I will make it a point to stay at Kim's Cabins because of her unselfish sacrifice to help me in a time of need.
I would highly recommend if you are planning a trip to plan your trip around staying at Kim's Cabins. You will not be disappointed with making her acquittance. I will tell you she is an absolute gem that every town along the way needs!
