I’m hoping to ride St. Louis to Kansas City on the KT and RIT for 5 days. I like Google Maps to keep me on course as I ride, but when I use Google Maps to plan the trip it sends me off trail for the KT quite a bit.
Does anyone have a good Google Trail Map that I can use during the ride and that keeps me on the KT?
Thx!
Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/18/2021 03:45 PM
You have to create a map route using Google Map's biking layer. I can help you create a map like I have used in the past, but I first I need to understand exactly where you are traveling to and from, especially if you are hoping to use a specific train station at each end. There are specific (fairly short) on street sections that you will have to ride in both St. Louis and Kansas City if you want to link up with the Katy Trail and Rock Island Trail.
Jack from Columbus on 10/18/2021 04:47 PM
As mentioned, you need to turn on the bike layer in maps otherwise it will route you on roads. With map layers, it will pick up bike paths and use those. It still gets off a little but it pretty good.
I used Ride with GPS but used the Google Maps option to do the layout. The native Ride with GPS totally ignored trails. I saved each days ride and then used the app to keep track of the ride. The think I did not like is it is good at telling you how far to the end of the ride but not to any waypoints during the ride itself.
Ron from Long Island NY on 10/18/2021 09:44 PM
OK, so here’s the map I’m playing with currently: https://goo.gl/maps/hUZ4gp69wx8QaQNL9
It seems to veer off onto local roads in quite a few places, especially the KT. And I’m not sure if this is correct or just an artifact of Google’s mapping software.
I recently rode from Niagara Falls to Albany on the Erie Canal Trail and Google was about 90% on that one…and when it was off I spent a good deal of time playing with my phone to get it right. LOL
Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/18/2021 11:15 PM
You could just use google maps to get you to your starting trail head, use the trail map available at the trail heads or from the DNR to check where you are on the trail.
There is also a map of the trail on this site that you can set to show the trail mile markers to pinpoint where you are on the trail.
Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/19/2021 12:25 AM
Here is a link to my custom Google Map that takes you from Downtown St. Louis to Katy Trailhead at Machens. This route actually uses bike trails along the Mississippi River, crosses you into Illinois, and then back into Missouri so you can reach the Katy Trail. I have other routes that I have mapped through St. Louis if you want to jump on the Katy Trail west of Machens. These custom Google Maps can be made by going to Google Maps/Your Places/Maps/Create Map/Draw a line/Add biking route: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edit?mid=1oHW_JlP2S8ADWHIfHxHlpac_ex_AOkcD&usp=sharing ... when you add a biking route, you can zoom in and trace your route on the actual dashed green bikeway.
Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/19/2021 12:50 AM
Here is the next map section from the Machens Trailhead to the Portland Trailhead. You have to zoom in and actually draw a line along the bike trail. You can't just go to the main Google Maps and enter a beginning point and a destination, otherwise it will route onto major highways and streets. The good thing about creating your own route line in Google Maps is that you can export this route GPS data to devices such as Garmin computers and smartphone apps: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edit?mid=1eyrArN6mTKE1FT06nLIHOW0iFRhCewEA&usp=sharing ... just let me know if you have more questions.
Ron from Long Island NY on 10/19/2021 05:56 AM
Very helpful and much appreciated.
I don’t suppose the interactive Google map on this site is available for download, so a rider could follow it along the ride with his current location?
Ray (webmaster) on 10/19/2021 08:33 AM
> I don’t suppose the interactive Google map
> on this site is available for download
No, the interactive map is actually a live Google map that we have added extra features to - so it requires a data connection. Sorry, I know there are sections out on the trail where you might not be able to get a good cellular signal.
Jack from Columbus on 10/19/2021 05:55 PM
Ron - I looked at your map posted in #3. It looks like it routed you on 50 out of Sedalia over to JEff City which is the quickest way but not the trail.
I did it by days to break the map up into smaller segments. I think the problem is that you probably put in directions from Kansas City to St. Louis and it routed that long route the shortest way for bikes.
It also pulls you off the trail short of St. Charles to go across the river and route you to downtown St. Louis.
You might want to try breaking the directions into multiple points if you want to keep one large map. I know you can add multple segments so you might try Kansas City to Sedalia and then Rocheport then ... and keep adding points to keep you on the trail.
R Bruce W LAUBACH from Williamsburg on 10/19/2021 07:11 PM
Here is my dumb question. Are you planning on following your mapped route instead of the trail or the trail map its self? If you are doing this to track your miles each day, why not use Strava or the app map my ride? It seems to me that this is being over thought. I say look at the paper map, look at the trail and trail signs and take your eye off of the cell phone or GPS devise. You wont see the trail any other way.
Mapmedic from KCMO on 10/20/2021 06:35 AM
Even when you select the biking option on Google maps it will sometimes plot a route on streets/highways. Pay close attention to this by zooming in on all of your segments, especially if you are dependent on that map and don’t have a natural sense of direction. Someone mentioned being unable to correct some routes on their phone. It’s been my experience that when I use an actual computer with a mouse I can click/hold a segment of a route and drag it back to where it’s supposed to be…..can’t do this on a tablet or phone. The Katy is pretty easy to follow the majority of the route with a few turns here and there in cities that the railroad obviously didn’t do. If you aren’t aware there are two good Katy trail,Facebook groups, I suggest Fans of the Katy Trail because the other one IMO is sponsored in part by a business marketing themselves. Here is a link with maps of my cross Missouri ride last month: https://strava.app.link/F1zIwlmwvkb

Lindenhof is a great place for an overnight (or longer) stay while biking the Katy Trail. Kathy is a great host catering to bikers providing secure bike storage with cozy and comfy accommodations. Fresh baked goodies awaited our arrival followed up with an awesome breakfast the next morning catering to our vegetarian needs. Close to wineries and emporium across the street for after hours goodies, especially early in the week as restaurants shutdown or don't even open. This will be a regular stop for future biking adventures.

I was told by my father, Roy H. Rude, who worked for the Katy 48 years (5 years on the section gang and 43 years as a brakeman and conductor) that his grandfather, George W. Welbern, who was a section foreman on the Katy Railroad from about 1880 to 1929, placed that logo on the bluff sometime before his retirement. My grandfather, Harry L. Rude, replaced his father-in-law (George Welbern) in that position 1929.
I hope this logo will continue to be restored and maintained.

Our stay at Joey's Birdhouse was refreshing. The location was ideal after a long day of riding on the Katy trail. It had rained during our ride and we were able to clean up our bike with a hose and rags that were provided. We were also able to do our laundry in the basement of the house next door. A small loaf of homemade bread was on the table for us as well as fruit and potato chips. The fridge was stocked with water juice and milk. There was the option of making coffee. The room was comfortable. We spent our evening looking through books that were on the shelves. Breakfast in the morning was wonderful, and Joey and Richard joined us for conversation. We would definitely stay there again. Only drawback was the rather large step to get into the tub/shower.

Our most recent trip was to Marthasville and included lunch. I selected KT Caboose for lunch due to it's proximity to the trail and the online reviews were great for the resteraunt. I ordered the smoothie while waiting on my friend. Later, when my friend arrived, we both ordered the falafel wrap which came with pita chips and a great dipping sauce. The falafel and dipping sauce were very good , the fruit smoothie was amazing, and the conversation enjoyable.

We had a wonderful stay at Katy Trail Bed and Bikefest. The directions we were sent from our hosts made it easy to check in and out. We stayed in the Attic Room, and the night we were there, there was only one other guest in the house. It almost seemed like we had the place to ourselves as the other person left before we were even up in the morning. The room was furnished nicely and the kitchen was well stocked. We stopped for dinner in Booneville, as we knew that not much would be open on a Monday in Rocheport. There were sausage biscuits in the freezer that we could microwave in the morning, and there were several dozen eggs in the refrigerator. There was pop in the refrigerator and pizza in the freezer for purchase. We opted to boil eggs for breakfast and boiled two extra to take on the trail. There were also muffins and oatmeal. The B&B had laundry facilities, which we took advantage of. There was a shed for bike storage. We had a little issue fitting our tandem, but it worked out. The location was perfect. It was right on the trail. Definitely would stay there again.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/11/2021 04:21 PM
Haven’t done it my self but the trail map above looks like there is a trail at Weldon Springs that will take you over the Missouri River on the Daniel Boone Bridge. It’s apparently not part of the Monarch but might get you over to Chesterfield.
Ray (webmaster) on 10/11/2021 04:50 PM
Yes actually it is super-easy, I've ridden it a few times. Where highway 64/40 crosses the Katy Trail, a ramp circles up to highway level and leads to the bridge crossing. It's all very safe; the bike/pedestrian lane across the bridge is completely separated from traffic by a wall, and offers some nice views of the Missouri River.
Once you get across the river, you are in Chesterfield and intersecting the Monarch Trail, with the "Premium Outlets" mall right in front of you. Go right on the Monarch Trail to ride alongside Spirit of St Louis Airport, or go left to ride behind the athletic fields to the "Chesterfield Outlets" mall and Top Golf area. If you want to go deeper into Chesterfield and St Louis County, I can't really offer advice beyond this trail.

Our group of four stopped here Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at 3 p.m. looking forward to a hot meal after not finding any place serving food since Hartsburg. (We did not cross the river into Jefferson City.) Despite seeing our hungry and tired-looking group, the waitress told us the kitchen was closed. She said we could wait until 5, when they’d begin selling roasted pork. Rather inhospitable. She did sell us chips. Uh, thanks?
Anonymous on 10/05/2021 09:14 AM
Not sure where here is but nonetheless, what did you expect her to do?
It seems looking at your post about the bar in Mokane that you and yours seem to expect special treatment more than anyone being inhospitable toward you. Do you expect to walk in a restaurants kitchen and fix your own steak to get it like you want too?
Biker Chick 515 on 10/05/2021 10:08 AM
Consider yourself lucky that you got food in Hartsburg - when we were through there the newly opened "The Burg" was closed. We rode through Portland on Friday and the woman there was cooking, waiting tables and cleaning them all by herself. Had the BEST pork rinds and burgers. And they were just getting ready to put that pig in the ground on Friday afternoon. I would definitely recommend Holzhauser's - but calling ahead might be a good idea.
Doug from Bluffton on 10/05/2021 11:33 AM
IF JG is talking about the bar in Portland then he/she/it, not sure these days, either failed to notice or is conveniently not mentioning the fact that the bar hosted a benefit raffle in ground pig roast for a local two year old with a LOT of medical issues that day. They were more than a little busy with all the work to take care of the hundreds of people that showed up. Setting that as a priority is not being inhospitable. To the contrary; giving up the first Saturday in October for the benefit of someone in need I think goes WAY beyond hospitality. Sorry JG and friends were so wrapped up in their own discomfort that they failed to enjoy the moment.
Bill in Houston from Houston on 10/05/2021 11:54 AM
This is why I tell people to plan everything ahead, and plan for contingencies, and then CALL the day before to see if the place will be open. And carry enough food to get you through a missed meal or two. Small businesses have a lot going on. It ain't all about me.
Great to hear that they were helping out a local family that is having a very hard time.
Sorry you had a bad time, JG. If you want to ride any of the other long rail/canal trails, my advice remains the same. All three we have ridden have required planning.

Our group of four cyclists stopped at lunchtime on Oct. 2, 2021. The young woman at the bar (who said her mom owns the business) said she couldn’t serve us food because the cook called in absent. Starving, we asked the young woman what she could make in the cook’s absence. Nothing, she replied; she didn’t know how to cook, she said. We asked if we could cook something for ourselves. She said the kitchen equipment wasn’t turned on. It seemed she was more interested in sitting back down on the barstool where we found her watching TV when we walked in.

We parked at the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Museum for four days a month ago with no problems. Area seemed to have traffic and we noticed a police car drive through the parking lot.

I tihnk in that section you have Rocheport and the tunnel and that section up to Columbis is on the river. Then there is Cooper's Landing which we enjoyed as a stop over break.
