I am riding the trail this weekend and was originally going to leave my car overnight at the Weldon Springs trailhead, until I read that comment from 4 years ago about the break ins to many cars. So now I am thinking about either Page Bridge, Greens Bottom Trail or MO Research Park. Does anyone have any information on these parking areas? Which one would be the safest for overnight parking?
LRM from St. Louis on 09/11/2012 06:10 PM
My pick would definitely be the Page lot.
sk from st. louis on 09/11/2012 11:00 PM
I agree, Page is your best bet. It's visible from page as you come across the bridge and less isolated than the others (not sure about research park.)
Ritzer from St. Louis on 09/13/2012 10:09 PM
Page is probably your best bet but I would assume that Mo Research Park would be okay as well.
merkin4 from St Peters MO on 10/09/2012 02:55 PM
Research Park has signs posted stating that the area is under camera surveilance. That probably makes it one of the safer areas for leaving a vehicle overnight.

I had a wonderful overnight stay at Joey's Bird Bouse B&B - McKittrick, MO this summer. Nice quiet room, comfortable bed, and plenty of "after-the-ride" snacks and beverages. I strongly suggest a morning omlette made from Joey's "friendy chickens" eggs left in the fridge, along with the homemade jam and toast. I highly recommend the B&B, and plan to stay there again when convenient.

Definately will stay here again. Joey and Rich were great and we got to relax and enjoy our stay without worrying about anything.
LJH from Iowa on 09/13/2012 04:45 PM
i ONCE AGAIN AGREE, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO STAY AND VISIT, JOEY AND RICH ARE ALWAYS GREAT HOSTS AND MAKE YOU FEEL RIGHT AT HOME. GREAT BREAKFAST TOO BY THE WAY. THIS WAS OUR SECOND STAY THIS YEAR, BE BACK NEXT YEAR HOPEFULLY.
David and Joyce from Garden City, MO on 10/09/2012 07:47 AM
We had another great stay at Joey's this past weekend. Joey the pear pastry's were wonderful. See you next time.
Joey from McKittrick on 10/09/2012 08:56 AM
Thanks to you all, being a B&B owner has been very enjoyable. I keep learning new things. Had my nephew pick up bags of black walnuts we'll see if we can work those into the pastries with the pears. Delicious fall bounty along the trail.
Caroline and Jeff from Kansas City on 10/09/2012 11:54 AM
My boyfriend, Jeff, and I are still talking about the wonderful food that Joey served us on our first Katy Trail ride. We were lucky to try out the cafe right after it opened and came back for a 2nd day for another great meal. Joey is a wonderful cook, preparing meals using locally-sourced ingredients and herbs. Rich was extremely hospitable and enjoyable to talk with. We are letting others know to stop by for a meal when they are in McKittrick!

My vote...Rocheport to Hartsburg and back (25 miles each way).
Wherever you decide to ride...Enjoy!
Annette from Goodland, Kansas on 10/04/2012 08:11 PM
Thanks we will look into that stretch.

Hermann (McKittrick) to St. Charles. River crossing at Hermann, river views west of Treloar, great small towns of Marthasville, Dutzow, Augusta and Defiance, nice open ag vistas, great tree canopy tunnels, great food and restaurants, river bottom forest (near wilderness for a stretch) at Weldon Spring, then wonderful historic and semi-urban St. Charles.
cr Henderson from Naramata BC on 10/04/2012 09:52 PM
If 50 mi one way, I'd say Rocheport to Columbia and back to HArtsburg, which I did a couple of weeks ago.
Very nice!
Trek on 10/05/2012 08:42 AM
This years Fall Katy ride for us will probably be Rocheport to Jefferson City. The river bluffs east of Rocheport are worth the trip as well as those east of Jefferson City. Not quite a 50 mile ride one way, but very pretty. There is a lot to see around Rocheport with the tunnel, railroad history (ammunitions bunker, etc.), cave, ancient writing on the bluffs, etc. The spur to Columbia is pretty more near town and ends in a nice part of old downtown near MU campus.
Keep in mind that lodging may be difficult if you are going in October. Everyone's last Katy fling, MU football, Octoberfests, etc. tend to fill up most places well in advance.
Robin from Macon on 10/05/2012 08:48 AM
In addition to what Trek wrote there is also the Monster Bash from Columbia to Rocheport on the 20th of this month, so watch out for goblins on that day! I'll be one of them! =)
Trek on 10/05/2012 10:16 AM
I tried to maneuver the tandem through "Bash Junction" (Hindeman Junction) a few years ago. It was very crowed and somewhat difficult to get through. I wasn't one to argue with the Mad Scientist though, after seeing the milk cow that he'd created!
denise wallace from Fulton on 10/06/2012 06:37 PM
I would agree with some... one stretch would be Boonville to Jeff City. Very scenic and full of history. Jeff City to Herman area is very pretty, but not much going on at the stops. You'll get a wide variety of scenes though.
Robin from Macon on 10/09/2012 10:35 AM
LOL, Trek! I don't blame you for skipping out on that conflict! I've been on the Boone Dawdle and the Pedalers Jamboree, but not this one! However, I'm thinking my "Biker Gang - The Trek's" will rumble on through the Katy on our hawgs for a good time! Should be fun!

We rode from St. Charles to Marthasville this past weekend and my favorite stop was in Defiance. We stopped and had lunch at Defiance Roadhouse, which is right across the street from Terry & Kathy's tavern. We sat on the front deck and the service and the food was excellent. Several other bikers had also stopped there and we met some great people. We will definitely stop here again and probably stay longer.
David and Joyce from Garden City, MO on 10/09/2012 07:44 AM
We also stopped at the Defiance Roadhouse this past weekend. Great service and great food. My husband said it was definately one of the better reubens he's had. We'll make it a point to stop back here again.

Anonymous on 10/08/2012 06:28 PM
Contact the MO DNR about getting a special use permit first to make sure that it will be allowed, then proceed with the other organizing. There is no need to organize the Katy event to find out in the eleventh hour that you can't do it as planned.
SteveK from Saint Louis, MO on 10/08/2012 07:39 PM
Big River Running has a "race management" page that has a checklist of things you should do/consider if you want to try to organize a race.

Hills...NO. Grades...YES. You'll be fine. Just keep pedaling. While there is nothing steep at all to climb...there is also very little that will allow you to coast.
Have a great time!

Denise, we enjoyed your trip log very much. Thank you. I like your format very much as it makes more sense to follow a trip the way you did it. We were a little worried about you mid-trip, but could tell by the Spot that you were traveling along fine. We also made a trip report, mostly for friends & family as it is a bit more personal, but perhaps you would like to check it out. We were just a couple weeks ahead of you. duebers.weebly.com

The only BnBs still in business at or near the the Dutzow trailhead or Marthasville trailhead are The Little House BnB and Heaven On Earth Bed and Breakfast. The Little House is within blocks of the Marthasville trailhead but the Heaven On Earth BnB will pick you up from and deliver you back to either the Dutzow trailhead or the Marthasville trailhead. They have even been known to pick-up from or deliver back to the Washington, MO AMTRAK station and other trailheads in the area. Their service can't be beat.

There is water and restrooms about 1 mile south of the N. Jefferson trailhead on the greenway at the city park.

The restrooms and water fountain at the N. Jefferson trail are now back up and running. Please excuse the mess next to the water fountain as we repair the concrete we removed to fix the pipe.

I'm hoping to get married on the Katy somewhere near the river...preferably near Rocheport, MO. Any ideas? We want to have a small ceremony (30-40 people) and then bike to Rocheport for the reception/B&B. We can ride 40+ miles, but we want to keep it a short ride on wedding day...so that our guests can join us! Thanks for any suggestions!

Katfish Katy's has a 12'x12'(?) deck right on the river bank at Hundsdale. This might work for the wedding party while guests would be facing the river enjoying your ceremony.
Chris from centralia IL on 12/08/2011 05:55 PM
something that would be ideal for you is this: http://www.industrialbicycles.com/Surrey_Delfino_Double_Bench_Quadricycle.htm
A 4-wheeled 9- person bike. It's called a "limo" priced at $4700. Maybe the shop at Rocheport could get a few and rent to you.
Pedal Pub on 12/30/2011 11:34 PM
Or the wedding party can get a 16 person bike with a beer keg on the front to either have a pre-wedding or wedding peddling party on the trail too. But since its a MO park alcohol is probably not allowed on the trail.
BikerBoy from Edwardsville, IL on 01/01/2012 01:07 AM
The Les Bourgeois Winery in Rocheport has an area especially suited for weddings. It overlooks the river. I do not know the cost, but it's a breathtaking site.
Mike from Saint Chuck, MO on 01/02/2012 07:09 PM
Back in mid-October, my wife and I took a road trip to park at the Rocheport trailhead and ride. To our surprise, there was a couple getting married AT the trailhead. Not literally at the bathrooms or anything but over by a large tree on the eastern-most dise of the parking lot.
For the record, I proposed to my wife while on an out-of-town bike ride. It was supposed to be a 60-mile Fall Foliage ride in autumn and I was going to propose at the end. Turned out I got the flu overnight, but I HAD to do it. So we rode one mile and I acted like I had to check my bike for something, got down on one knee and proposed...and rode back to the trailhead sick as a dog!
She did find an AWESOME cake-topper with bride and groom on a tandem bike, customized for specific bike color and bride/groom skin/hair color.

What about the band shell or gazebo or whatever it is in Hartsburg. Pretty little spot.
Kriss on 01/08/2012 03:30 PM
The High Street Victorian B&B in Boonville (on the way to Rocheport),sits right above the river and has a beautiful back garden area, perfect for weddings of your size. We have two decks (one slightly higher than the other) that would be perfect for you guests. Also facing the river. There are three beautiful arbors for the bride to pass under on her way to the pergola. There is also a beautiful water garden and water falls and bridge, that is perfect for pictures. Please give us a call and we will be happy to give you a tour and be sure to check out our website at www.highstreetvictorian.com
eht from Columbia, MO on 01/13/2012 08:26 PM
Not sure exactly what you mean by "keep it short," and it's not on the river, but you could look into using the gazebo at Flat Branch Park in Columbia, which I know is available for weddings. It would be about 16 miles to Rocheport.
KT Biker from JC on 01/16/2012 04:31 PM
You should consider LeBourgois (spelling???) winery in Rocheport. It's a beautiful place (right along the Katy) and they have had several weddings there.

A little tardy in our comment but if you're not married yet we have a beautifully restored dance/reception hall with a commercial kitchen and adjacent B&B lodging, on the trail next to Hermann. McKittrick Farmers Mercantile; themerck.com Thanks, Joey

Thank you ALL for your replies and help (and good stories!). We did end up getting married last Saturday and it was GREAT!!! We got married literally ON the Katy Trail, just after the tunnel in Rocheport. What a beautiful setting! We kept our ceremony really small (19 people). Our guests stood on the trail while we got ready a little ways down the trail. Then my 7 & 9 year old boys (best men) rode their bikes a little ahead of us...we followed on our tandem. And that was our wedding "aisle" march! Had a ceremony in the middle of the trail (1 1/2 minutes long lol)...thank you other cyclists who paused to wait for us to say our vows!!! Then we all went to The Rocheport General Store for lunch. Thanks John at The General Store! It was wonderful!!! All our guests raved about it being the most fun, laid back wedding. Highly recommended if you're always cycling on the trail like we are! That afternoon, we rode the tandem to Jefferson City for our honeymoon in a B&B (Cliff Manor B&B also highly recommended). Good luck to all future Katy Trail brides & grooms!
