Best is pretty vague. Best for viewing tree color in the sunlight? Best for finding a ride from the end back to your start point? Best for tailwinds? Best for elevation gain or loss?

Broadly, neither direction is best.

Fruita Riders from Fruita, CO on 05/21/2014 03:02 PM
We've had the pleasure of riding the KATY in both directions and found that it's great either way--wonderful small towns to explore, safe travel with miles of wandering thoughts, trees, turtles, gar, and friendly folks. For us the ease of planning a shuttle has made the difference. We've left a vehicle in Clinton, ridden to St Charles, and made a shuttle arrangement with a great B&B, Lococo House, to get back to our starting point. Go enjoy!

Terry from Festus on 05/21/2014 09:26 PM
I have a group riding the trail in 4 days for Labor Day weekend. We are riding west to east for 4 reasons: 1. It is slight, but the east end is a lower elevation than the west. 2. The possibility of having a tailwind is greater riding this direction. 3. I do not call them hills, but for the less experienced, it puts the "harder" grades at the beginning of the ride leaving the last two-thirds flat as a pancake. 4. The ride home when finished will be much shorter.
I have rode both ways and it is great either direction. Every time I tell someone about this ride I find someone new who is interested. It continues to grow and grow.

Billy from Mokane on 05/21/2014 10:04 PM
West to East. Follow the flow of the river...

Pseudio on 05/21/2014 10:15 PM
Just like Billy said take the Lewis & Clark route. It is more "authentic". But didn't they go in both directions?

Lyn from Wichita on 05/25/2014 11:00 AM
I've also ridden the Katy Trail several times. West to East is slightly easier and shuttling is easier from St. Charles. Warning for out of staters, there is no tent camping is St. Charles, Sundermier's don't allow tent camping.

My go-to tires are continental tourride 700 x 32s on a 29er touring bike. I am a Clyde. I have 3-4000 miles on them, but I rotate them 1-2x a year (or more accurately, switch them out for another size for some reason, then re-mount them with the one that has the most wear on the front). My rear tire tends to wear more because it bears more weight. I ride mostly chip and seal roads with them. My guess is that the will last 8-10,000 miles at this rate if the sidewalks hold up. Never a flat. No complaints from me. I paid about $30 each on eBay.

My son is part of a local group that has been training for the Katy Ride this June. Unfortunately, he broke his wrist in a biking accident and is unable to use his registration. The ride organizers will not refund our fee, since it is past the deadline, but they have told us that we can transfer his registration to someone else if we get them the person's info by Tuesday, May 28. The original fee was $360, but we are asking $275. This would include everything that is included in the original registration with the exception of the souvenir shirt, since they cannot change the size that has been ordered. Please let me know if you are interested.

Trek on 05/02/2014 07:19 AM
If you're coming I35 to Kansas City and then I70 east, which is probably the quickest, the closest trailheads are Boonville and Rocheport. Rocheport east to Jefferson City is a nice ride with some of the best scenery along the trail. Boonville to Sedalia is also a nice ride, a bit more peaceful with less crowd than the Rocheport area.

We're riding out and backs from Rocheport this weekend. Was going to the Racoon River Valley again, but the Fondo is putting us on the Katy instead.

Figs from Olathe, KS on 05/19/2014 11:36 PM
the area around Rocheport is the part of KT that I find most attractive and scenic. Basically from New Franklin to N. Jefferson City. I have ridden that section numerous times and love it.

Barry on 05/22/2014 07:56 PM
If you are near Columbia and are doing day rides, the MKT spur is a great trail as well. We parked at the nice parking location just off Stadium and rode out toward the Katy and then back into d/t Columbia. We went to the pizza place (Shakespire) d/t that had a bike rack just outside the window (I think it was on the east side). We enjoyed the MKT spur trail just as much as we did the Katy on the day before.

Pseudio on 05/22/2014 11:48 PM
Barry is correct, the MKT down to the KT west to Rocheport or Boonville or east to N. Jeff City has all the trail you need for a day ride. Enjoy.

I am going to ride the trail the week of Memorial Day, and we are planning on camping in Augusta, Portland, Huntsdale, and Sedalia. I called the phone number for those campgrounds, but just got answering machines. Should I leave messages and try to get reservations or will I be OK just showing up?

we are riding that day also, i have had luck getting someone in the evenings. sedalia you need to call about 10 am, they dont take reservations.

MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 05/13/2014 07:50 AM
The only one I would worry about reservations for is Klondike Park in Augusta. You can make reservations online at their website. The other campgrounds always seem to have many more sites than they will ever need.

Figs from Olathe, KS on 05/19/2014 11:24 PM
That's gonna be a busy weekend on the KT. Saturday and Sunday are Pedaler's Jamboree days. This doesn't directly affect the places you said you wanted to stop, but may affect the amount of riders you encounter along the way. The main event is in Boonville, but you should notice high traffic between Boonville and Columbia both days.

RET from Saint Louis on 05/20/2014 06:38 AM
We aren't leaving until Monday, so I think that will be the only really busy day.

I rode the Katy Trail 2 years ago from Clinton to St.Charles. It was one of my favorite trips in life. There was beautiful scenery, wonderful places to eat along the way, friendly folk (even stopped and helped an older gentleman pick some morel mushrooms), I camped one night, stayed in a bed and breakfast the next and finished in St. Charles arriving in the dark under the glow of casino lights before going to have a beer at a local bar. The whole trip was magical laced with a real sense of accomplishment. So now I'm set to do it again. My only regrets are that the trails do not extend to Kansas City or Lake of the Ozarks that I know of, and they really should. I think if we could somehow connect these 3 great locations and maybe extend A Lake Ozark trail to Branson or Springfield we would find a massive increase in tourism. It would be quite amazing to spend an entire to weeks just biking our beautiful state of Missouri.

Get your reservations for the Eastern end early because you are entering the time of all the Fall events. And if going B&B you will be expected to pay for two nights during that time for a weekend stay.

Agree. Many of the towns on the eastern end have some kind of festival(s)...especially in September and October.

I can only assume they overbooked in case someone cancelled.

Its convenient and close to the trail and bridge but accommodations are not much. You haven't missed much. Down 50 has more hotels, Days Inn I believe, with more restaurants available.

Bike Rider from Kansas City on 05/13/2014 12:05 PM
Try the Baymont Inn downtown Jeff City. Easy access from the trail on the Greenway and across the pedestrian/bike bridge over the river. Hotel is older, but clean. Morning breakfast is standard fare, but includes waffles and hot scrambled eggs. Pretty good value for the mnoney.

Jim from St Thomas on 05/12/2014 05:30 PM
Its about a quarter mile or so. Make sure you know where the spur you take to the hotel is though. If you miss it and end up at the trailhead you have a long uphill ride to get back to it. There is also a Holiday Inn Express in that area. That's where we usually stay.

Trek on 05/12/2014 07:10 PM
The Hotel Frederick is worth checking out. It's a very nicely renovated old hotel right on the trail near downtown. We've stayed at the Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express and the Frederick....all have redeeming qualities.

Anonymous on 05/12/2014 10:30 PM
Isle of Capri close to the trailhead on the river has $80 king rooms during the week. Buffet dinner and gambling for your party of 8?

Anonymous on 05/13/2014 06:18 AM
The first time I tried - I found the spur to the Comfort Inn difficult to find and ended up riding all over the place before I got there. One of the more "well worn" Comfort Inns I have stayed in. OK...but needs a good cleaning and renovation in my opinion. I'll look at Holiday Inn Select right next door next time. Have also stayed at Isle of Capri. Can't beat the location...RIGHT ON THE TRAIL. Even in a "non-smoking room" you and your stuff are going to stink of smoke. That's your call...but the smoke is something I don't like. Haven't tried Hotel Frederick yet. I am kind of cheap when I'm bike touring. That's my 2 cents.
