Sure. You are experienced road riders, so why not?
Hank on 09/01/2013 09:50 PM
I like Montelle Winery, but I am not a big fan of biking there. Yes you can do it but it is on narrow twisty roads with lots of traffic. I would just as soon go to Augusta Winery myself. Or Mt. Pleasant. Montelle is great but not enough to get me out on that road.
Don from Ellisville, MO on 09/02/2013 07:41 PM
I also love the view from Montelle's deck, but holy cow that is a climb on a bike and I think somewhat dangerous. Even Mt. Pleasant would require some to walk their bikes up the hills.

Go to Amtrak dot com. At the top of the page is a virtual assistant ready and able to answer all your questions about Amtrak. They also have the baggage policy posted. That way you will have the answers you can rely on.

If you are looking for food and drink in Hartsburg, check out the new Hartsburg Grand (next to the former Old Muddy). Excellent menu and service; one block from the trail.
Figs from Olathe, KS on 06/24/2013 12:08 PM
Hartsburg is still a great stop on the KT. The Grand is really good and don't forget Doty's. Both places have great food and great service and treat cyclists very well!
JMA from Kirksville on 08/31/2013 01:07 PM
Any info about Doty's being open Sunday of Labor Day weekend? Or know of anywhere else to eat in Hartsburg that's open Sunday, Sept 1, for lunch?

There is some pretty good stuff on you tube. Some of it I think the kids would enjoy because it pretty funny and informative. Take a look, see if any of this would work for you.
ArkyKenny on 08/27/2013 08:39 AM
I'd recommend you look up some information on Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham. He and his family moved to Franklin from Virginia in 1819, and he painted in Booneville, Columbia, St. Louis, and internationally. I think he was also a state senator, and the first professor of art at what would become the Univ of Missouri. There is a book out there called Paintbox on the Frontier, that is written for young people detailing the life and times (1820-1860's) of the Luminist scenes he painted in pre Civil War central Missouri. Tons of information on that whole era, Booneville, The Santa Fe Trail, etc.---all things that laid the ground work for the Katy

I have been planning a Columbia to Sedalia ride for Saturday August 31st. This has been the plan for several weeks now but with the extreme heat I'm having second thoughts. Can anyone tell me how shaded the trail is from Boonville to Sedalia? I would be on this part of the trail during the afternoon when it would likely be at its hottest. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
BikerBoy from Edwardsville, IL on 08/27/2013 08:00 PM
Columbia to Rocheport is fairly shaded. Rocheport to New Franklin is more exposed to the sun and with the farm fields all around, is quite hot and humid. Once you hit Boonville, you have hills to Pilot Grove, but it is covered by the canopy. Most of the rest of the way to Sedalia is covered. But you should always wear sunscreen and have lots of water. That's going to be a fairly long ride on a hot day. Hopefully you will get some cloud cover.
ArkyKenny on 08/27/2013 08:36 PM
BikerBoy is correct. All I would add to that is this: 1) It's uphill from Booneville to the othe side of Pilot Grove, but it is deceptively low grade--and EVERY time I ride it, I try to keep the pace I would on flat ground......and tend to overdo it. Back off your pace a little. 2) Water is scarce around Clifton City. Fill up in Pilot Grove and carry plenty.
Hank on 08/27/2013 09:14 PM
I am reasonably bike fit (about 1,500 miles this season) but find that riding during the heat of the day really takes it toll. I might average 14-16 mph on the Katy in the morning but find myself slowing to 12 mph or even less in the heat of the day. I also require more frequent rest breaks, and it seems no matter how much I hydrate I still need more.
Like you, I was planning a long ride for this weekend but am now having second thoughts. I will likely ride some but the 75-some miler I was eyeing is probably out the window. Too bad. If you can put a lot of miles behind you in the morning it might work but for me, I would likely be riding 35-some miles in the 2 to 5 p.m. time frame and right now that doesn't seem like fun. Too bad.
Don from Ellisville, MO on 08/28/2013 03:14 PM
Heat? Ha! Way back in 2012 (if any of you were around back then), we had a summer that would make this weekend's temperatures look downright chilly! :) It's all in how you are acclimated, but please take precautions and ride as early as possible.
David on 08/28/2013 03:39 PM
Thanks for everyones input! I've decided to push the ride back a week or 2. This is my first ride on the Katy and the longest ride I've ever done so it doesn't seem wise to attempt it on a day when temps are supposed to be near 100. I am very much looking forward to the ride and hopefully can enjoy it better with more moderate temps in another week or 2.
Darrell from Jefferson City, Mo. on 08/28/2013 07:01 PM
Sounds like a good idea David! I think you will enjoy the ride, it's the part of the trail that I enjoy most, others do as well. Services and water are a bit sparse in some areas on that section but as long as you are prepared, it will be a fun ride.
bikerchick on 08/29/2013 05:27 AM
Agree hydrating is very important. Will be staying at the Frederick in Booneville and riding towards Sedalia. At my age I dont attempt super high mileage. Going for a good ride and enjoying the Katy. See you there
Pseudio on 08/30/2013 11:53 AM
David, you are wise in waiting. I did a similar ride last year over the Labor Day weekend when it was in the high 90's and humid, Rocheport to Jeff City and back to Columbia and the MKT section back was a challenge in the heat with all the people out during the holiday. The key is to start hydrated and stay hydrated the entire ride.
Paul K from Florissant,MO on 08/30/2013 01:26 PM
As long as you hydrate consistently during your ride and fill up at every possible place along the trail, you should be fine. My friend and I rode from Machens to Clinton and back (468 Miles) the first week of July last year. The temperature never went below 102 deg the entire 9 days of our trip. We stayed at hotels/B&B's along the way and turned the thermostat way down as if we were rooming with penguins.

BikerBoy from Edwardsville, IL on 08/27/2013 08:36 PM
The old MKT rights-of-way widths are still valid. Depending on where you are, that can be as little as 12' from center of the tracks, to 50' on either side. A lot of the landowners along the trail have marked where THEY believe the park to end.
ArkyKenny on 08/28/2013 09:41 AM
If you are taking a leak, don't worry about it: If you are thinking about stealth camping, don't do it.
Pseudio on 08/30/2013 11:59 AM
There are plenty of town parks and private camp sites to stay along the trail without worrying about "legal width of trail" JB. Private landowners are sensitive about stealth camping...can you say "Deliverance"?

There are different route suggestions on the front page of this website, scroll down and look for the links. You will need to cross the Mo River at the Page Ave bridge (I-364). From there you will go something like 15-20 miles through suburban St. Louis. I have never done that exact trip though have ridden suburban St. Louis a lot. It can be quite nice and it be completely bike unfriendly. You just have to plan your route.
If you don't feel like riding this by bike there are shuttles available in St. Charles that will bring you to Kirkwood.

Not sure what map you were looking at but the extension is suppose to go from Pleasant Hill to Windsor and it has along way to go before it is done.

Progress on the Rock Island Trail State Park was recently mentioned on MO Bike Federations website. There is a link there to a January 13, 2012 article in the Kansas City Star.
The trail is now going to be built on the railbed after federal approval. That approval is expected to take about a year. The original plan was to build along side the railbed.
From that article: "The project will be constructed in nine phases, with completion estimated originally to take about three years."

There are 3 primitive campsites operated by the Jefferson City Parks & Rec at the Carl Noren river access under the bridge into Jefferson City. They are $5 a night. The camp sites are very easy to get to from the trail.
Gary from Near Tebbetts on 08/28/2013 12:26 PM
The Jefferson City waste treatment plant is just east of the Carl Noren river access. You will be OK there as long as the prevailing winds blow west to east but you will be in for an early morning surprise if the winds shift to the other direction.

Actually, it looks like Warrensburg is the nearest Amtrak stop to Clinton. So what is the best way to go from Warrensburg to Clinton? Taxi? Is there some sort of shuttle?
ArkyKenny on 08/23/2013 06:22 PM
What about taking the train to Sedalia, then doing an out and back to Clinton? That is 35 miles one way, or a good one day ride for me. I'd rather ride the trail than in a taxi. Just throwing that out there as an option. Cheaper. Safer. More riding.
