Not the traditional five day ride but a couple of century rides in the fall.

Your best bet is to actually work your way north using the nice rail trails on the eastern edge of Kansas. Look up the Southwind Rail Trail starting in Humbolt which leads north to the longer Prairie Spirit Rail Trail to Ottawa. Then from Ottawa, turn east along the Flint Hills Rail Trail to Osawatomie. You can then work your way straight east from Osawatomie, Kansas to Clinton, Missouri.

Stu from San Diego on 02/03/2021 03:46 PM
Thank you! That looks perfect. Due north from Tulsa...

Mark from Lee's Summit on 02/03/2021 05:55 PM
No problem...let me know if you have questions about crossing the Mississippi River once you get near St. Louis at the east end of the Katy Trail. There are multiple options, but some are more fun to ride across, especially the bike/ped only Chain of Rocks Bridge. Unfortunately there isn't a great connection between the Katy Trail and the Chain of Rocks Bridge, so you have to weave around quite a bit.

Call a couple of the trailside B&Bs or hotels. I can't remember who I used but that was how I found one. I paid $40 from the Amtrak to Clinton TH.

Leaving parked vehicle at Jeff City TH

Just wondering if anyone has any comments on the safety of leaving a parked car overnight at the Jefferson City North TH parking lot?

John from Pleasant Hill on 01/26/2021 10:48 AM
The Jefferson City Trailhead is one of the safest parking lots on the entire Katy. I would not hesitate to park a car there long term.

Anonymous on 01/26/2021 11:38 AM
Times change I guess. In years past this trailhead did not get good reviews here. I wouldn't leave my car there if I had a choice.

Jim from St. Thomas on 01/26/2021 07:27 PM
I would not leave my car overnight at the North Jefferson trailhead. The are frequent break-in/thefts from cars there. A safer option would be either the JC Parks and Rec pavilion parking lot just south of the trailhead or across the river at one of the state office building parking lots.

Mike Gerwig from Prairie Grove on 01/27/2021 11:10 AM
Jefferson City: There is a bike shop on W Main Str near the capitol building - The Red Wheel Bike Shop - that has a large and well lighted parking lot. Me and another guy I rode the Katy with have left our cars there for 3-4 days. The owner is really a good guy. He also has a shuttle service that he provides too When we rode the Butterfield Stagecoach Exper route we finished in Jeff City and he drove us back to Springfield The cost was approx $220 for the three of us
Good shop to pick up some last minute supplies or check out the bikes

Cathy from Pittsburgh from PIttsburgh, PA on 01/28/2021 12:28 AM
I used to live in Jefferson City and Red Wheel Bike Shop is a great place. I'm glad to see the previous post from Mike Gerwig saying that he has parked his car there for rides. The bike shop is on the south side of the Missouri River, close to where the Pedestrian/Bike Missouri River path intersects with W.Main St. in Jefferson City. So you would park your car at the bike shop (be sure and tell the guys there hello) go maybe 1/4 mile to where the pedestrian/bike path starts, to safely cross the Missouri River, (it's a great experience to see the Missouri River from that path), and probably less than a mile to connect to the Katy Trail.

My wife and I are also planning a trip west to east late Spring 2021. There is a tool on the website called the "Trip Planner". I used it to get an idea on how much we wanted to ride each day. Here is a link to Google Sheets of our planning worksheet. In column A (Day), you enter the stops you want to reach on each day. As you fill in the days, the table to right will update with the estimates miles for that day with a couple of columns to calculate estimated ride time at both 10 & 12 mph.

We are starting at Pleasant Hill and riding the Rock Island down to Windsor, down to Clinton for lunch, then back to Windsor to spend the night on day 1. We just wanted to make sure we rode the whole enchilada.

We have a lot of bicyclists stop in Marthasville for their first night going west or their last night going east.

The Community Club offers inexpensive camping options, and then we have 2 vacation rental homes on the trail, right next door to Philly's Pizza. There are a few other short term rentals a little further off the trail as well.

You can see our places at https://missourihaus.com/marthasville

We'd like to shuttle from St. Charles to Clinton in the afternoon or evening, then stay over in Clinton so we can get a full days ride from Clinton the next day. Anyone know of a shuttle service that does this?

Bryan from Austin,TX on 01/01/2021 08:58 PM
We have stayed in Boonevillek, Rocheport, Hermann, Jefferson City, and St Charles on various visits. Use the mileage chart to plan your day and use Google to find a Hotel/ B&B to book your accommodations. I highly recommend using the rail system for either the outbound or return leg.

We stayed in
Clinton
Sedalia
Pilot Grove
Rocheport
Jeff City
Rhineland
Augusta
St Charles

Hotels or BnBs.

There are some short days in there that you could combine or split to reduce your number of days on the trail.

Not sure about shuttles. I know that there are fewer than you would think, and they cost more than you would expect.

Ron Roberson from PLANO on 01/05/2021 06:07 AM
I left my vehicle at the Clinton Parks & Rec (right next to the trailhead) and overnighted in Pilot Grove, Jefferson City, Hermann, St Charles, and St Louis. Took Amtrak to Sedalia and biked back to Clinton. Doing it again, I would probably start in Sedalia and end in St Charles (but bike to Kirkwood to catch the train back to Sedalia).

We are 2 people in our late 60s when we road the KATY. Stayed at:
1)Clinton, 2) Sedalia, 3) Boonville (earthquake that morning), 4)Columbia (a detour up the side trail), 5) Jefferson City, 6) McKittrick (stayed at Joey's Birdhouse), 7) Augusta, 8) St Charles.
That is actually 7 days of riding. All in hostels or B&Bs. The side trip to Columbia added a day. And one could easily shorten that itinerary; but we liked to take things in along the way. Use the book or website to find your places to stay.
You can see my recent entry on how we got from KCI to Clinton by public transsit & taxi (w/o bikes).

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 01/19/2021 10:02 AM
If by motorized you mean electric, then yes it’s OK. If you mean by motorized as in gas powered, then no, that is not OK.

Then you also need to be prepared if the electric bike runs out of juice. Not saying it will but have a plan in case it does.

I will add (and not meant to shame anyone).ive had both knees replaced and I find it easier to ride now than before the replacements. That said, if you feel more comfortable with an e-bike, get one and enjoy the Katy!,

The state parks probably have some restrictions on the speed of the assisted bikes. Check their site.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 01/19/2021 08:04 PM
That section won't be completed for another 3-5 years. Over the next 2 years, about 3 more miles will be built, but that still leaves about 4 miles of the most difficult terrain (and no property rights yet) to complete. Just this last weekend, I posted some detailed maps of the gap on the Rock Island Trail (Kansas City to Pleasant Hill) Facebook page. There are several low traffic routes that you can use now to make the connection to Lee's Summit, but you have to be at least somewhat comfortable riding in a little traffic.

We hoped to stay here on 10/10/20 but didn't want to share an indoor space at the time of Covid. The host said we were not welcome to camp outside because of a testy neighbor. We DID visit the place anyway to get out of the heat and take a shower. We left a $10 donation that was well worth it. The place is cool on a hot day.

This hostel is spartan, but no less sanitary than sleeping in a park.

In 2016 I posted a question about getting from MCI to the Katy without spending a fortune. I was basically told that a shuttle (expensive) was the only way. That was wrong.
We took bus 129 into the city and transferred to bus 47, which goes right to Union Station. (75 cts each for senior, inc transfer). Amtrak to Warrensburg ($11.35 each). Taxi to Clinton ($40 for both of us + tip). That was $64.20 for 2 people. Admittedly it cost less because we could get senior fare on bus + train. We could have taken Amtrak to Sedalia and saved the taxi fare, then it would have been about $26.
ALSO, we had our gear, but not our bikes. We rented bikes from Katy Bike Rental. They were at our motel in Clinton when we arrived and we left them at our motel in St Charles when we finished – for a very good price. Thanks to Todd White of KATY Bike Rentals for letting us know how to make this happen.
Unfortunately, I thought I had posted this in 2016, when it happened.

I am planning a Spring trip to the St. Louis area to visit relatives and would like to bike a portion of the KATY trail, maybe one or two nights camping. I was exploring Marthasville east to the end or vice verse. I was hoping for Free Camping but it looks very limited. (I know camping is prohibited at the trailheads and private property). Any suggestions or options along that stretch of the trail, city parks, etc... Thanks - Dan -from Idaho

Jim from St. Thomas on 01/12/2021 06:49 PM
There is very little free camping because letting people camp for free is a poor business model! :-)

A better answer is that even though the Katy is a state park it closes at sunset so camping is prohibited in the park. That leaves private campgrounds and community parks as your only option. Some of those are free and those that do charge are extremely reasonable.

Dave from Kirkwood on 01/12/2021 07:00 PM
I am not sure how familiar you are with the Katy, but it mostly travels alongside farms (and other private land) and then through some small towns. There are no real expanses of public land like the national forests out west. Thus, free camping is not really an option. There are a couple small conservation areas near the trail that might allow that, but I don't think there are any in the stretch that you mention.

There is a small city park in Marthasville that allows cheap camping, and Klondike Park (east of Augusta) has a nice camping area.

I am planning to pedal the Katy from St. Charles to Sedalia. However, I would prefer to not back-track on the Katy to return to St. Charles. Is there another good route? On a side note, I like history, old forts, and battlefields.

k on 12/31/2020 01:59 PM
Hi, John. It's likely that a return route would consist almost entirely of country roads, most of which have speed limits of 55 mph (and drivers often exceeding that). If you're willing to endure that, you could string together a few historical markers, museums, sites, etc. Of course, part of your return journey could consist of Amtrak segments, too.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 01/02/2021 02:40 PM
The key to not back-tracking would be to use Amtrak for your return trip and continue further west to Kansas City on the Rock Island Trail spur off of the Katy Trail. If you really like history, then I would recommend the national World War 1 Memorial museum in Kansas City. It is right next door to the Amtrak at Union Station. You could even take the train to downtown St. Louis and check out the updated westward expansion museum that is underneath the Gateway Arch. There are several other top notch museums in Forest Park that you could ride to on your way back to St. Charles. The old forts and battlefields are pretty slim around Missouri, but the museums that I talk about all have some excellent displays and recreations.

Gypsea from Vancouver WA on 01/11/2021 09:27 PM
I too will start in st Charles, in late May, going West. My return route is sort of the ACA Route 66. If you are interested in details feel free to email me: gypsea00@hotmail.com

There is no designated campsite, no registration, no fee. We camped by the large pavilion at southwest corner of the park nearest the Katy Trail. There are toilets here, but they were locked at the time of our 10/09/20 (time of Covid) visit. We used the pit toilet & water spigot at the trailhead (100 yds away). The pavilion's lights and power were inactivated and we could find no other power source.

The local grocery and restaurant had closed (maybe permanently). There is a convenience store north out of town. I was told that the road conditions are risky. The road quiets down after dark. There is a VFW Club just north end of the park where you can get a drink. That will generate some late night noise.

I'm responding to the question about hammock camping. I recall that trees were scarce and not close enough to accommodate a hammock. We were charged $12/tent. I'd guess that your hammock is as big is my bivy sack.

A note about noise. There is 24/7 background noise from a nearby fiberglass factory. Deal with it, there are no other campgrounds on offer in Sedalia.

We were able to recharge our phones at one of the vacant RV sights.

We camped here on 10/04/20.

There are great folks that have started a campground a little west of Sedalia called Lazy Liz horse and RV campground. If not listed on here maybe Ray can add them.

This review is about the Volunteer Park in Hartsburg, it is not the American Legion Park. The park is 40 yards north of the Trailhead next to the caboose. You use the trailhead toilets and water. The park is small and charming. Young couples brought their children to play. The neighbor was very friendly.
This is a lovely, quiet town.

There was no charge for staying here. We did not confirm availability before we arrived, but we were there in October when usage is light. There would definitely NOT be room to stay here if an event was scheduled for the park--you would have to move to the American Legion Park. We camped here on 10/8/20.

We camped at the parking lot 1/2 mile west of where the trail crosses Hwy 40. There was very little flat space for tents here and no shade from the hot sun. Cars came and went during the night. Engine braking noise from trucks on Hwy 40 was frequent. Because there are no facilities, be sure to load up on water at your prior trailhead (New Franklin, in our case). We camped here on 10/06/20.

Thank you for circling back with information. So many people ask a million questions, ride the trail, and don't give anything back.

This is a lovely quiet park, but there is constant noise from a nearby factory--24/7.

There is a Casey's convenience store in town.

We stayed here on 10/05/20.
