On Saturday , October 13th I plan to cycle ~ 100m on the trail .
From Herman to Tebbetts & back .

My bike is a road bike with dropped handle bars , and 25MM road tires .

My question is will these be suitable for the light gravel surface I am expecting .

Also, any suggestions on how the improve my Katy Trail experience , please let me know .

Kind Regards
Joe

From Hermann to Tebbetts and back is about 65 miles but it will feel like more than 100 especially with those tires and the rain we have been experiencing. If you have a cross bike or a mountain bike it would be a much better choice. If the road bike is your only choice Be prepared for flats and having to walk some areas.

Jerry Whittle from BELLEVILLE on 10/12/2018 07:25 PM
The bigger tires the better as you can run lower pressures. I've ridden short distances on the Katy with 700x25 tires and didn't like it. It was bumpy and sometimes felt very squishy. I've ridden the entire Katy Trail 9 times on bikes with 700x32 tires at around 70 psi and it was a much smoother, stable ride. Next year I'm putting 700x35 tires on my touring bike and probably running 60-65 psi. I weigh around 215 lbs so around 260 lbs total with the bike.

Andy Chasteen from Oklahoma City on 10/13/2018 11:20 AM
as long as it's dry, 25's are completely fine. I've ridden the entire east to west on 25's with no problems. And my wife packed down her road bike for a bikepacking trip last year and rode 25's - https://andrewchasteen.com/stories/katytrail. If it's wet, you'll find sections where you'll bog down a bit.

We stayed here for a girls night Oct. 2018. Kathy was absolutely wonderful. She made us feel at home and was very informative on places to go and eat. The rooms are beautiful, the beds are so comfortable, and the champagne tub was amazing. She has a hot tub outside which we really enjoyed plus a beautiful fireplace. Kathys breakfast was amazing one of the best we ever had. We can't wait to go back and do it again.

We stayed with Kathy at the Lindenhof B&B in October 2018 while cycling the Katy Trail. We really enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was fabulous--the best of our trip! Refreshments were offered upon arrival. It was handy to use a sprayer to clean up our bicycles after a messy day’s ride! Our room was very comfortable and spacious as was the common area. Great hospitality---highly recommended!

My wife and I stayed overnight at Kim's cabins in Windsor as part of a riding the Katy Trail. The cabin was immaculate and had all the comforts of home. The thing that made the visit so memorable was Kim. She heard that my wife needed some gloves and drove us to the dollar store and while she was at it she gave us a tour of the Amish Country. Places to eat where within easy walking distance and we really enjoyed our stay in Windsor.

Good evening. Has anyone traveled from downtown St. Louis to the start of the trail in Machens? A buddy and I are arriving in St. Louis on the 15th of September and heading to the trail on Monday the 17th. Any information would be greatly appreciated. How long of a trip can we expect? Thank you. Scott

Mark from Lee's Summit on 08/20/2018 09:29 AM
The Mississippi Riverfront Greenway Trail runs about 12 miles north from Downtown St. Louis if you are starting near the Arch. Your best be then is to enjoy the longer route across the Mississippi River and utilize the nice trails in Illinois in order to get to Machens. This Illinois route is about 28 miles versus 18 miles, but the shorter Missouri route would require you to ride on major highways with small shoulders. The Illinois route takes you across the Old Chain of Rocks pedestrian/bike bridge into Illinois where you jump on the Madison County Confluence Trail. Take that trail to the northwest past Wood River and into Alton where you can cross back into Missouri using the striped bike lane on the cable-stayed Clark Bridge Hwy. 67). Once you cross back into Missouri, take rough West Alton Trail to get close to St. Charles Street. Then take St. Charles Street to 94 Hwy. to Saale Road to Dwiggins Road to 94 Hwy. to Machens Road...the idea is to use county sidestreets to stay off of 94 Hwy. as much as possible. Machens Road takes you to the Katy trailhead just across the live railroad tracks.

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Il on 08/20/2018 12:40 PM
I would normally agree with Mark about the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. It's worth a trip by itself. However it is often closed and locked lately. I can't seem to find a good web page with the open hours.

However there's another option. Take the Riverfront Trail north and cross over the Mississippi River on the McKinley Bridge. The map below shows it.
http://www.mcttrails.org/map.aspx

One way to avoid Hwy 94 is to not cross the river in Alton. Rather stay on the trail (past the casino on the road for a little while) to Grafton. Then take the Grafton Ferry across the river. This will add more miles plus cost money. Also the Grafton Ferry should be open on the 15th and 16th, but worth checking first.

The Chain of Rocks Bridge is open but the lot is locked except for special events.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 08/22/2018 04:29 PM
When I rode from the Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis three years ago, I avoided the Machens trailhead because there is not much there along the flood plain and the trail is always much rougher for those last 5 to 10 miles to Machens. I crossed before St. Charles at the Page Avenue bridge (Rte. 364) and mapped out a nice scenic route through the best trails and road areas of the city. I pulled up my Garmin history and the distance was right about 30 miles from the Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis. You can Google Katy Trail to Downtown St. Louis and see my 2015 route or I can even post my Garmin link if you want.

Hello Folks,

Myself, a buddy and his son would like to give a full "thru-bike" of the KT, starting from West to East in summer months of 2019. We're hoping to rely mainly on camping opportunities, free camping if we can help it. We'd like to get in about 50-60 miles a day and I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this before? It seems like after N. Jefferson, camping becomes vary scarce. I've considered Daniel Boone CA as a waypoint in the middle of it all for camping opportunities but welcome you suggestions? I'm a southern Illinoisan excited about giving this awesome MO rail trail a try :) -Shawn

John Hutchins from Pacific on 10/09/2018 05:33 AM
Camping gets a little thinner east of Jeff City, but there are good options. The Turner Shelter in Tebbits, Herman MO city park, Marthasville city park and Klondike Park. I'm not aware of any camping available east of Klondike, though.

Bruce from Pittsburg, ks on 10/09/2018 10:16 PM
The Missouri Dept of Conservation conducts organized rides from Clinton to St. Charles. If fact, they have a ride in progress right now; they are in Booneville tonight. The are fully supported where they haul your gear, provide hot showers, tents for rent, and even bikes for those who fly in. I think they have one in early summer or late spring, too, but maybe someone on this forum could answer that. You couldnt pay someone to shuttle all your camping gear and be at each night's destination cheaper than what the MDC charges. If you have any flexibility in you schedule, its an option you may want to consider.

We camped(mostly) west to east and spent roughly 7-12 pp each night. Pleasant hill caretaker never came to collect payment. Pilot Grove is free. Hermann was nice with brewery in town. Use the trip planner to map out the campsites and figure your mileage from that. Nothing east of Klondike (reservation needed).

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Illinois on 10/10/2018 09:24 AM
Here's what Bruce is talking about that happens in June. This is the 2017 ride, but should be very similar in 2019.

Several things.

First, if you are riding self contained (carrying 50# or more of gear) please realize that to get to this park you have to climb one of two very steep paths. The west one is paved and the east one is gravel. Very STEEP, but relatively short. Hard climb after biking 30-50 miles. I’m sure most people walk it.

Second, reserve a site. We were there on a Friday and the place was FULL! I had called two months before and reserved site #24.

Third, do NOT reserve sites 24-28 unless you want to climb an even bigger and longer hill to a campsite with a great view, but no water or showers; just one pit toliet. I’d recommend sites 30-38 as they are close to the shower house (unless you want a quiet out of the way spot, and then I’d recommend sites 11-16).

Lastly, if you do get one of the spots up on the hill (24-28), there was no sign at all saying sites 24-28 this way (like all the rest of the sites), just a sign saying overlook and picnicing.

It’s a beautiful park with great showers and a group kitchen room on one end of the shower house. I’d stay there again, but would get a different site.

Jerry Whittle from BELLEVILLE on 10/08/2018 04:43 PM
Thanks for sharing. I've ridden into Klondike Park up to the scenic outlook, but with just me and the bike. Must have been quite a challenge loaded.

Is there a bike route from Olathe, KS to Pleasant Hill that largely avoids roads with high traffic and also has a shoulder or bike lane?

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/08/2018 09:55 AM
The Indian Creek Trail will take you about 26 miles towards your destination but I think it will be roads the rest of the way from the end of the trail.

Allen from Shawnee, Ks on 10/08/2018 10:28 AM
There is a bike path along 150 hiway after you get east of State Line about a mile, it is seperated from the hiway, there is a shoulder on the road up to there. The bike path runs I think to Smart rd, then go south to PH , there isn’t any shoulders after leaving 150 except there may be a bike path along Smart rd for a ways. If you are used to riding roads this is probably doable, if you arent comfortable around traffic it would be best to to find another way. If you come up with another solution please post it as this question comes up now and then.

Allen

Allen from Shawnee,Ks on 10/08/2018 10:36 AM
Scratch above conversation I remembered it wrong, bike path ends at Ward rd.
Then it would be all two lane south from there. Sorry

$12 per tent. Not $10 per couple. We had two small tents and paid $24. Could have brought a slightly larger tent and paid only $12!

Park at the Depot. The building doesn’t have to be open to use the parking lot.

Parking: (1) 2nd & Osage 2 blocks from the Amtrak station & across the street from the police station, or (2) Katy Trail State Park Trailhead in the DNR parking lot on the east side of the Katy Depot, that is 6-7 blocks away & is next to the Katy trail. The first is convenient if you are taking Amtrak bac to Sedelia.

Maybe someone knows the history of the rail banking but I’m curious why does the trail start/stop in Clinton Mo? Looking at the old MKT rail map it could go all the way to Ft Scott or Nevada in Missouri. Are there any future plans to take the trail on southwest to these towns? Or is this going to be the end of the vision besides the Rock island corridor? Any one who knows I’d appreciate the info!! Thanks in advance

We stayed at Victoria's Place (formerly Cliff Manor Bed & Breakfast) for a night during our full Katy Trip. (Trip was Aug 17-22)- The manor itself is lovely and Victoria was a fantastic host. There was a lockable shed for bike storage overnight. She had snacks, soda and water all available to us during our stay. It was a little bit rainy that night, but we walked a few blocks for dinner and then Ubered back to the B&B. The breakfast of beignets, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs was a perfect way to start out the next day of riding. The view of the Missouri River and JC Bridge from the back of this home cannot be beat. I highly recommend this B&B if you plan to stay overnight in Jeff City.

Yup, we took the pedestrian bridge over to N. Jefferson City from the N. Jefferson trailhead. This B&B is maybe 50 yards from where the trail spur ends in N. Jefferson; just after crossing the river. We walked maybe a 1/2 block to the Irish pub and had a great dinner. Stayed at B&Bs along the trail, except for the hotel in Sedalia, and all of them were great.

We stopped here for lunch during our full Katy Trail Trip on day 2; Sedalia - Rocheport. (Trip was Aug. 17-22, 2018). It's right across the street from the trailhead. Very easy to find. The waitress was incredibly friendly and they appear to be used to the Katy traffic. (and they are not angry about it) Smoking is still allowed in this place BUT they have a giant smokeater machine so it didn't actually smell smoky if that makes sense. The trip from Sedalia was a bit uphill and the trail levels off right after this stop. Pretty typical bar food but it was exactly what we wanted that day. Beers were cold and water glasses were giant.

We stayed at the Katy Trail Junction B&B. You could throw a stone from the trailhead and hit Jerry's B&B. He recommended Deon's and we all thought it heads above any other cafe/grill/bar we visited on the trail. Good fud!

Just stayed with Jerry last week. Great guy. He will run out in the middle of the night to rescue folks. Would definitely stay with his B&B again.
