I'll be in Columbia for a half-marathon on 5/26 and want to do a day trip from there on 5/27 (40-60 miles RT max) to keep the legs loose. Any advice on east to Jefferson City or west to Boonville and back for an easy little day trip (with ease of finding restaurant near trail to eat)?

A ride from Columbia to Hartsburg would be about 50 miles RT. I always eating at the Big Muddy Tavern in Hartsburg

Go west after you hit the KT ride up to Rocheport very nice along the river. You'll want take you camera.

And, the great thing is you can get ice cream no matter which way you go. Katfish Katy's in Huntsdale if you West or at Cooper's Landing in Easley if you East!

Midsouth, we need to ride together! I've made it a habit to check lots of places and make sure they still have ice cream. They always do, so I guess my checks are working. It's my duty to society.....

SalsaBoy, where are you located? I noticed you also ride the Frisco Trail. I will be riding the Katy from Sedalia to August and back starting May 14th.

Man oh man would I like to take you up on that....but then there is that work thing. Most of my Katy time this summer will be on the weekends because I'm doing RAGBRAI at the end of July. Hope you have a good time. Maybe we can meet up some time.

My husband and I are going to be biking the trail this June with our daughter, who will be almost two then. We'll be taking an easy pace - about twenty to thirty miles a day - and staying at lots of bed and breakfasts along the way.
So if I could, I'd pick out all of lodgings based on breakfast. We stayed at Meyer Hilltop Farm in McKittrick last summer and the breakfast there was AMAZING, but, alas, that particular place doesn't host children. At any rate, if I could have a breakfast like that every morning for ten days I'd be in heaven.
Which bed and breakfasts on the Katy Trail live up best to the "breakfast" part of their name?

We loved the breakfasts at the Cliff Manor in Jeff City and The Doll House in Rhineland when we did a two day ride.

Joey's Bird House in McKittrick welcomes children. It's right on the trail with a fully stocked breakfast (and enough for trail snacks) left in the refrigerator for you to warm up yourselves or I will come and prepare a breakfast for you. You have the whole place to yourself. Joey

We loved the dormitory accommodations. They are truly a first-class operation with new, scrupulously clean, and beautifully landscaped quarters. They even provide a great laundry facility in the building. Cold drinks and simple breakfast foods were provided in the fridge in our room, along with tea and coffee. We would highly recommend the Schoolhouse Dormitory.

From the DNR website: RIGHT-OF-WAY. When approaching oncoming users, always move to the right of the trail. Always pass on the left side, and make your intentions known by announcing your approach. Bicyclists should yield to pedestrians. Everyone should yield to horseback riders.

I have found that some horses are really skittish around bikes -- especially ones they can't see coming up behind them. If coming up to horses from behind, I usually announce my presence to the folks on horses, slow down and ask if the horses are okay with the bike. If approaching the horses, I will usually just stop on my bike and let the horses pass me ...again, asking the riders if the horses are okay with the bikes. I have had zero problems with horses on the Trail.

If horses aren't OK or are skittish with bikers/hikers on the trail, maybe those horses shouldN'T be on the Katy Trail

Riding the trail again this year and planning on making a stop at the Capital Building and Gov. Mansion. Does anyone know if there is good bike parking close by each?

Bike parking, you mean where you drive in an the attendant gives you a ticket and watches your bike? Not that fancy near the Capital lovy. How about the Amtrak station? But if you have a decent lock any secure place near the sites is good.

There is a bike rack at the Lewis and Clark monument located between the Capitol Building and the Governor's Mansion. The Capitol complex is a pretty low crime area but it wouldn't hurt to lock the bikes up.

Why not just keep going to Clinton? It's flat (maybe even a little downhill) so that way you can say you've done the whole thing.

Yeah they are often rude. Been that way for years now. It's almost like they feel inconvenienced by customers. Marthasville has a local bar and a pizza joint there small but happy.

Just there last weekend and the food was excellent! Staff was extremely friendly. Not sure what you experienced but it just must have been an off day! Definitely worth the trip.

The guy who helped us was very nice and friendly. They didn't have any tubes in stock that would fit my bike (700cc Schwinn Varsity, pretty common). He tried to sell me new tires, which took a while to install. They didn't fit the bike and wouldn't turn past the forks. This process took about an hour. I told my riding buddies to go on, and had to sprint to catch back up.

riverrat it sounds as you dont want the bar to be open. I have lived here all my life and I was in the bar yesterday to have lunch and the bacon cheese burger was larger than cynthias however i have not had the fish but even then prices are about the same i think it raised about 25 cents but what hasnt raised look at gas and food they have to pass the cost on otherwise they wont stay in business at this rate. i would rather see the bar stay open then be closed again. if you dont like them then thats your opinion, but dont judge them for opening the bar back open. and yes I am a relative of Marks and I spoke with him there was a issue with the sale but not on the new owners part it was with paper work with the bar. so know your facts before you start being hateful

I believe this is a Katy trail bike forum and not a personal vendetta facebook or tweet social network. If you have a concern or disagreement with the owners speak directly to them and not drag people who may not be involved (or care) about your petty quibble. Grow up.

There is an outstanding Mexican place just off the trail in Sadalia just about a 1/2 mile past the visitors center on the left when heading west. It's a yellow building and tHe have big Tamale signs hanging up out front, and are accross the street from the Caseys convenince store. They have awesome food, and will make just about anything for you, even if it's not on the menu. So good we hit them on our return trip. Sorry, I don't remember the name...

We are wanting to visit the Katy trail for the first time. Bringing our kids for a 3-4 day weekend and wanting to do about 100 miles. Have to keep the cost down, so we will be camping.Suggestions on which stretch of trail to do? Recommendations for newbies?

Although you have many other options the two I suggest would be to come up thru Jefferson city and come east to Bluffton and camp at Steamboat Junction for two nights, riding into Hermann one day and west along the river another day; then moving east to Klondike park and camping and riding that area. You could also camp at New Franklin and spend several days riding that area. Either of these choices would offer stores for supplies and towns to visit. The city park in Hermann has camping and also a nice pool. Not sure what month you are planning to take your trip, but the kids might enjoy the pool after a ride on the Katy Trail. Hermann is just across the river from McKittrick and has a nice bike / pedestrian lane on the bridge. There is a grocery store right there at the bridge where you could buy provisions. Riding either direction on the trail from McKittrick would be a fun and interesting ride. Have Fun!

Thanks. I'm sure once we do it for the first time, it will all make more sense. We don't live close enough to 'scout out' where all these places are and whT is available there. We are just going to jump right in and do it and have fun. We will know more for the next time, and meanwhile, thanks for the advice.

One of the most popular sections is around Rocheport, especially going east. Both Katfish Katy's and the campground at Franklin are options in that area.

I just finished going east to west, then back over a 7 day period. The area between Sedalia and St Charles was nice. How far are you going in a day? Knowing that will help.
