Wow, what a small world.....I just read this and saw you were from Bolivar also. I was standing in front of that tree on May 23rd riding from Sedalia to Herman. Incredible history along the trail including this estimated 350 year old tree. Send me an e-mail some time at husker1@windstream.net and I'll send you the picture of the tree with my bike in front of it that I took. Besides, I'd like to know if your a Kim in Bolivar that I know.

We had a great stay here Memorial Weekend 2008 and the food at Glen's was great. The staff couldn't have been more helpful with our bikes, etc. They really cater to us Katy Riders!

There is a google map on this site of that will show you the area. Go to the Katy Trail Home, select side trails, select North Jefferson spur. You can take Kathy Rd from the trail head, left on Oil Well Rd, Left on Nuter Rd - cross over Hwy 63/54 turn right on ramp and keep to the left of the road being mindfull of oncoming traffic. You can also subsitute the side trail to the left of Kathy Rd which will take you the the pavillion parking lot (next to Nuter road) then follow the remaining directions from there.

We just did a 180 mile ride with two 4 year olds and a one year old. Had a wonderful time. The only comment I am going to make on the entire trip is HOW WONDERFUL BECKY'S BURGERs and Cones is!!!! Truly lovely people and super tasty food, after five days of bar good, their salads and home made desserts were AMAZING!!!! If only we lived closer... and I'm still considering it reasonable to drive the five hour round trip just for more homemade blackberry pie!

I second your assessment of Becky's Burgers & Cones! I was going to eat at the Lunch Box in PG on my trip 3 weeks ago, but it was closed on the day I arrived. I saw Becky's mentioned in my Dufur guide, so I pedaled on over. I told the cook that she made the best grilled chicken sandwich I'd had in a *long time*!!! Delicious with swiss cheese & crispy bacon. And they didn't have to twist my arm much to get me to try the homemade rhubarb pie a la mode -- and it was *awesome*! Great prices & friendly help, too. Strongly recommended.

We were ok with the wireless going out, but when the bath water ran dark yellow-brown and only cold, we packed our bags. We were told that they have to flush their pumps periodically, and that was the cause for our loss of hot water. So you might want to ask about that when you make your reservation. It IS well located to the trail, we had a nice ride through a residential area to the access.

This extension has begun in Pleasant Hill and will progress east to Windsor. I believe they gave a 2010 goal for completion, but that may not be realistic considering much of it is development of the trail NEXT TO the existing railroad, meaning new bridge creation, etc.

The hostel is for showering and sleeping, like a bunkhouse, and for working on bikes, if needed. It's like camping inside with a a roof, running hot water, heat, and air-conditioning. Since it is cleaned by its patrons, some do it better than others.
The thick foam mattresses are laminated with heavy clear plastic. You'll need your own bedding. The shelter also has a fridge with freezer, a microwave, coffee pots, picnic tables, and some parlor games. Location: on the north side of the trail in Tebbetts, MO, 13-miles east of Jeff City. The door key hangs on a utility pole outside.

I am planning to ride the entire Katy Trail in under 24 hrs in mid June. Does anyone know if there are any problems with the trial? Are any bridges out, and if there are bridges out is there a way to get around them and continue the ride? Is any parts of the trail flooded? The park is closed at night.....so no it's not legal to ride at night. Although, the poster did not say that they were going to do it continuous.

The Hermann City Park is actually a pretty neat place. It's huge and has lots of camping spaces for both RVs and tenters. There's also a baseball diamond, tennis courts, playground, large covered pavillions with picnic tables, and bathroom/showers. From the large number of people out playing and walking, it's obvious that the town appreciates the park.
The camping spots have water, electricity, and a fire pit; some have their own picnic tables, too. The bathroom/shower house was clean and everything worked. The shower was nice and hot, although you have to hold a pull-chain down to make the water flow -- saves water, I'm sure, but isn't very convenient. The park was well-maintained and litter-free. I enjoyed spending part of the evening watching a rec-league baseball game at the park. You pay on the honor system.
The only downsides were (a) it was a bit pricey ($15 for tent camping); and (b) the campsites are all right next to a busy, noisy road. Overall, an enjoyable place to camp.
By the way, the road & bridge from the trail to town was no problem at all -- a very wide shoulder on the road and a bike/walk lane on the bridge separated from traffic by a concrete barrier.

The park is nice. Also, from approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day, the municipal pool is
open, it's between the tennis courts and baseball field. What a treat at the end of a summer
ride!
It's arguably as refreshing as the frozen custard store 1.5 blocks east of the new bridge and
the Tin Mill microbrewery a half block further east.

Well, I'm the other guy Jim is talking about that stayed overnight on the lower floor with him and his daughter. Very nice father/daughter and would have enjoyed traveling the whole trail with them. After reading a post on April 2nd that complained about some dead flies and heater not working...so what? How can anybody have anything negative to say about a place to stay that only costs $5 providing shelter, a hot shower, no mosquitos, a mattress, and best of all air conditioning. And for a bonus to bikers, it even has a shop in the back set up to work on your bike with stocked tools if need be. This place is wonderful after a long day on the trail. Many thanks to the late Mrs. Turner who donated this shelter to the state who was a long-time resident of the area. P.S. You have to pay a visit to Jim who operates the Bar & Grill next door. He's a special person and will take care of you.

(Didn't know if that was our early wakeup call!) Gave coupons for brunch at a local winery due to owner celebrating her birthday. The brunch was great! Biker bars down the road were loud but enjoyed the music from our room. If you are early to bed on a weekend, bring ear plugs!

We stayed here on 5-22-09. Wow! Where Maggie and George great!! They picked us and our bikes up at the bottom of the hill. That evening, they fixed us a great pasta dinner with salad. That night, we were entertained by George and his bluegrass band!! Then, the next morning, the breakfast included bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, potatoes, juice and coffee! Great hosts!! We will definately stay there again when we bike the Katy Trail. Thanks!! :-)

Pretty good hamburger & great waffle fries if you don't have any other choices. I'm told Dotty's is a can't-miss place, so I'll have to plan my next visit to Hartburg for Thu-Sun.
(I hope I'm commenting on the right business -- I assume there's only one bar in Hartburg.)

Oh Yea...the Hartsburg Emptys...had that happen last year after riding from Boonville..my Brother is a kinda what ya call a big guy and I also am not a tiny rider...so we had them whoomp up those 5 buck pizzas machine gun style.. and we were eating them faster then he could whoomp em..one after another after another..back at the Globe the 2nd floor was rocken and shaken all night ..we both had nitro heartburn all night. Would have given 100 bucks for 1 tum. Our next day ride back to Boonville was very difficult.. Note...Dotys cafe is super as we found out on a later trip...Dale Cannon says ...its all good.

My goal for next year is to ride a 100-mile-day on the KATY. I am debating which part of the trail would be best to do this. I have riden the trail in four days the past two Memorial Day weekends. I am thinking the ride from Easley west to Clinton would be best. I am thinking I would climb the hill from Boonville west to Pilot Groove and avoid the hill from Sedalia east to Pilot Groove. Does any one have an opinion?

If you're up for the task, 100 miles is 100 miles...we rode a century from Boonville to N. Jefferson and back a couple of years ago. No hills with pretty evenly spaced trailheads. The Hotel Frederick was a good place to land afterwards too. And I hear there is a good, very inexpensive shuttle service out of Boonville too! Just in case.

Unless you want to view your chosen section of the trail only once during that 100-mile ride, you might consider selecting a 50-mile section, and then riding it both ways in a day. That way you'll have your vehicle with you in the evening, and won't need a shuttle service to take you back to it. This two-way riding is something the locals do a lot at varying distances.
Riders will also go out 25-miles or so in one direction from a trailhead, then ride back to this trailhead (where their vehicle is)for lunch. After lunch, they go 25-miles in the opposite direction, and then ride back to their vehicle for dining out somewhere that evening, or for going home or a place to stay that night.
