I was eastbound, closure was between mile marker 50 and 49, closer to 50.

Backtracked and left the Katy trail at the Busch Greenway trail for pickup at the Busch Greenway trailhead.

Hello,
Concerning the closure mentioned in this post....we will start riding the Sedalia to St Charles route over 4 days starting this Saturday. This means we will hit this MM50(ish) of the trail about 10 miles before we finish our ride in St. Charles on Tuesday. Any further updates on whether this section is still closed or being worked on? Doesn't appear there is a way around per the rider that wrote this update. Just wondering if anyone has ridden it in the last few days and what the latest status is?

Also, will be negotiating the Salt Creek bridge out section our first day of riding on Saturday this weekend. Assume we can just go around the closure (is this a gate across the trail?), and see if the creek is passable and dry? Thanks for any updates!!

Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/08/2020 10:50 PM
The Department of Natural Resources staff usually only have to completely block the Katy Trail during tree trimming operations when they are cutting down really big, leaning trees that could crush someone biking past. There is no way to know for sure, but there have been very few posts in the past week about major tree clearing closures so you should be alright.
As far as the Salt Creek bridge washout, it has been dry in the area for over a week and the weather forecast is good, so you probably won't even get wet crossing the concrete low water crossing on Saturday. If you want to see this area beforehand, just go to Google Maps and type in Davisdale, Missouri for the destination. Change to satellite mode and you will see the narrow footbridge that you take from the eastbound direction of the Katy Trail to the Davisdale parking lot, across Hwy. 40, and along the Conservation Road to the concrete low water crossing (it is shown in light gray on the satellite Google Map).

BikerBoy from Maryville, IL on 10/09/2020 10:48 AM
Salt Creek was passable, and should be if there is no rain over the weekend.

As far as the tree trimming, I just waited 10 minutes yesterday (as did other riders coming the other way) until they allowed us to pass. It's dangerous work, so please be respectful. Where they have already trimmed (Weldon Springs eastward), the trail is very rough because the skid steer has churned up the gravel. Expect to have to go slower for those few miles.

I can't say enough good things about the School House B&B in Rocheport. Convenient and restful for Katy Trail riders! I stayed solo in the south dorm and it was the perfect size with every needed amenity. Shower/bathroom was great. To go breakfast items were great for getting right back on the trail. Bike shed is secure and has a compressor and bike tools to help with any needed adjustments. Hosts were amazing and pointed me right to the places that were open after hours. 100% would recommend!

I rode from North Jefferson to McKittrick yesterday - Oct 5. There was some trail construction going on just east of Portland.

Most of it was inactive and of no consequence except for one short section featuring a road grader and a compactor. That section was exceptionally soft requiring me to walk my bike for about 100 yards.

My wife and I will be finishing the trail this weekend (Oct 4, 2020) and I wanted to ask if there were any updates on the trail detour about 3 miles west of Rocheport. We will be riding east to west.
We had read in the KT Forum there was a good possibility of navigating the nearby levee to cross (weather permitting) without using the Hwy 40 detour.
Any specific directions would be appreciated.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 10/01/2020 12:42 PM
The Fans of the Katy Trail Facebook group has lots of maps and pictures from people who have just this week used the levee and paved concrete channel to cross Salt Creek because the water is low right now. If you are not a Facebook user, then go to Google Maps, type in Davisdale, MO for the city and it will take you right to the area. Switch the map to satellite view and you will see a light gray outline that details where you leave the Katy Trail and how the path along the levee turns and crosses the Salt Creek paved low water crossing. Walk back up the levee on the other side, continue a short distance along the Conservation Road, cross 40 Highway to the Davisdale gravel parking lot, and then take the narrow walkway bridge back over Salt Creek and continue west on the Katy Trail. I will warn you that the current Google Map satellite view shows the wooden Katy Trail bridge still in place over Salt Creek, but trust me, it is washed out and in pieces nearby.

Kaper from Cape Girardeau, MO on 10/01/2020 02:38 PM
Thanks, Mark. That is great to know!

Teri McCormick from Vernon on 10/03/2020 06:32 AM
we rode the levee yesterday and cycled across the dry crossing. It is raining today so that could affect crossings in the short term. I think rainfall total is expected to be .10 inch of rain. Worse case scenario- you turn around and take the road.

I stayed here on 9/28. $10 for a site and a shower was a good deal. The first door from the right of the house was open, with instructions for self-registration on the wall: Fill out the form, add the cash, and drop it in the slot with the provided envelope. The plus about reserving online is that they'll send you the code for the shower house door lock. We simply asked another camper for it. There's an electrical outlet on the outside of the shower house, as well as an outlet on the light pole by the water spigot if you need to charge anything. Fire wood was offered for sale ($10) on the registration form, but I didn't see where it was kept, or if it was self-service at all. There was no one at the house, but this was a Monday afternoon. There's also a Casey's in town for supplies, which adds to this being a great spot to overnight.

MM 181.5

South of the trail starting from the (currently downed) bridge that goes under State Road 40 and 7km west of the Rocheport "tunnel" theres a white gravel road. - Mo Conservation Rd - That will take you to a white gravel parking area.

The camping area is technically to the west of the parking area. No clear sites or evidence of sites. That night there were more mosquitoes in that area. I was more comfortable on the mowed grassy area directly next to the parking area.

The site closes at 10pm until 4am so there should be no vehicles overnight. I wasn't disturbed and it was very quiet overnight.

Make sure you have enough water. From the west New Franklin will be the last opportunity. From the East, Rocheport.

Nothing at North Jefferson, but you have a couple of really unique options just east and west of there. The Katyrest Caboose is an old rail car/caboose room right in the middle of Hartsburg and the Turner Shelter in Tebbetts is a bunkbed hostel if you want to hang out with a bunch of random cyclists for the night. If you have your car with you, though, they might all team up and want you to make a food run for everyone there...

Overnight in Sedalia then a day biking and then drive east for lodging in Augusta and to pick up the katy. for a day ride which way is best out of Sedalia: east toward Pilot Grove or west toward Windsor? If must choose either a ride on the KATY OR take the Rock Island for a short day trip, which is b best?

Mark from Lee's Summit on 09/30/2020 11:01 PM
Go west...for one, there is a short on road detour when you leave Sedalia going east. Second, since you are doing an out and back, chances are you will have a nice tailwind on your ride back to Sedalia if you start westbound in the morning. Third, either Windsor or Leeton (on the Rock Island Spur) will be good turn around options both with nice places available for lunch.
Going east would only be worth it if you wanted 75 hilly miles where you could make it to Boonville and back, but by the end of that day I would not want to drive to Augusta.

Camped here 9/23/20.
I called the local police station as a courtesy. There was no problem and he was quite helpful.
1 660 834 4300

The site has two large pavilions should the weather be rough but the grass is well maintained and comfy.
The bathrooms were perfectly fine. The power for the bathroom lights is in the Women's though a well placed high powered flashlight will work - the walls are white.
Theres no facility to hang clothing or a bag of toiletries.

The shelters have power (2 standard outlets). The power for those is in the shelter. Lift the lever. All power is controlled by the master box on the light pole though I didn't need to touch that.

A note of the power pole. Its a street light and it will be on overnight. So unless you want a night light choose your spot carefully.

There is a swimming pool at the park and no doubt has showers. As there was a pandemic I cannot speak for the use or access to the pool.

Locally theres a Dollar General for supplies and a couple cafes.

I am not sure about crossing the creek bed at Salt Creek as others have done. The state webpage says detour to Hwy 40 at County Road 467, but that is pretty far west.
Can we access Hwy 40 thru the Davisdale Conservation area to reduce time on Hwy 40?

Yes you can access Hwy 40 thru Davisdale parking area..
Heading west to east you will come to a barricade.. Turn right and cross little walkway bridge thru the parking area.. Then turn left onto hwy 40.. But if i was you i would cross hwy 40 and go left on gravel road until you reach levee.. Go up levee and cross creek.. You will see trail on left once you cross the creek.. What about the Portland area trail damage..... can you walk your bike around this hazard?

Mark from Lee's Summit on 09/30/2020 09:30 PM
If you look on the satellite view of Google Maps about 1.5 miles west of Portland, you can clearly see the rock slide that blocks the Katy Trail. You can also see the very easy 1-3/4 mile detour that uses Schmid Way and a short section of lightly traveled Route 94. You would be around the detour and riding the Katy Trail again in less time than climbing past the first 10 trees between the rock slide and Logan Creek.

Yes, the bridge is out over the creek west of Rocheport. I'm gonna see what that looks like on October 4th. Don't know about crossing at that location, but some folks have.

Curt from Dallas on 09/29/2020 05:28 AM
Just crossed at the washed out bridge at Salt Creek on 09/26. It was a little muddy and slippery going down one levee and up the other back to the trail, but it certainly beats getting on the highway detour. Just be prepared to carry your bike down and up a muddy levee if it’s rained recently.

If I take the train to Kirkwood, would you suggest riding my bike back to St Charles, go hire a cab or shuttle back? Looks like only 12 miles, but are the roads biker-friendly?

If Shuttle back from Sedalia....recommendation for shuttle service?

k on 09/28/2020 07:22 PM
There are plenty of cyclist-friendly streets between Kirkwood's Amtrak station and St. Charles, but that route will be more like 20-22 miles, not 12. Google maps bicycling view is a good start.

Given the possibility of rainy, cold weather and the rising rate of COVID infection in Missouri, I'd prepare as much as possible by researching and booking lodging ahead of time. But that's just me.

I'm planning to ride St. Charles to Sedalia 3nd week in October and am booking my hotels all in advance. Everything in Hermann is booked solid on weekends. You might find something mid-week in Rhineland, Herman & Augusta...., but I'd sure reserve in advance. Very busy because of Octoberfest, Wine Tours, Changing leaves, etc. Have also found that rates are really increased a lot for weekends...sometimes double the mid-week rate. I wouldn't want to bike all day, and then have to waste a lot of time trying to find a place to sleep.

About 10 miles west of hartsburg is a campground Coopers Landing, right on the trail. They have snacks and drinks in their store. On a Friday afternoon you will most likely find a food truck out there. This summer they have had food trucks from Thursday thru sunday

Dotty's is awesome. Reach out to her via her facebook page and she usually responds pretty quickly. Coopers has gone through some changes since the flood in 2019. Not sure what food they have now. Claysville is great but only on weekends. Go with Dotty's. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed there in August. April offered to wash our bike clothes and drove us to/from town to get dinner
Small, but very nice motel. Great rates

Maybe contact them and not an open forum.

Doug from Bluffton on 09/26/2020 04:56 PM
Judy this forum is just other riders like yourself posting. Sometimes businesses along the trail check it, but if you want to know what a particular business offers you need to contact them directly. They are the only ones that can tell you what services they offer.

Is any part of the trail shutdown between Boonville and Jefferson City due to contruction/rain damage? I am planning to ride the route on Sep 19th. If the trail is shut, is there a detour available? Who can provide succint information on such a topic? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

BikerBoy from Maryville, IL on 09/17/2020 08:09 AM
Yes, there is at least one closure with detours. Please go to the home page of this website, then scroll down. On the left you will see "Trail Conditions". That is where the user-reported closures and detours are outlined. You can also go to MO State Parks' Katy Trail page to read the advisories there. Do not let these closures keep you from riding the trail. They are a minor inconvenience when you consider the whole experience.

We did find the trail closed between Boonville and Rocheport. A bridge has been washed out due to the last year flood. We rode through the main rode as detour, but it was not safe to ride due to busy fast car traffic. We made it safe to Rocheport. Then we learned that crossing of the stream is not difficult and many had crossed it. We should have stayed on the trail. I suppose, it can be better managed at the trail. It seems the riders are using the broken trail regardless of the broken bridge.

I crossed the stream just last week. As it hasn't rained in a while, it was dry. Even if a few inched wet, the surface of the crossing is hard and should be easy to walk across. Climbing up or down the levee is a different matter. I went up it with a 60 lb tandem and need help from my wife.

We’re starting in boonville and heading to mcbaine to hop on the mkt to Columbia next weekend - thanks for the updates! If anyone has any others please feel free to share - at this point with the la k of rain in the forecast I think we’re going to take out chances with the trail instead of the roads ?? Detour sounds kind of sketchy but we’ll take it if need be....

MePlusBike on 09/25/2020 06:46 AM
@Dennis. Having done the route 2 days ago I can recommend to ignore the closure signs with respect to the detour. When you reach the portion that is closed you can do one of two things.
1. Go around it like many have done to get to the affected bridge.
2. Cross the road completely and continue on the gravel farm road to the affected bridge.

From there you’ll go down a steep bank (hence rain warning) and cross via a concrete slab. A quick left puts you back on the trail.

In either case if the weather changes, makes the embankment slippery or water runs across the slab you are still only a couple hundred meters from the road detour. Traveling west to east.

East to west travelers will hit the affected area about 7km after the “tunnel” at Rocheport.

Made that crossing two weeks ago. Levee is steep but manageable. I did get the worst batch of chiggers I have ever had. Trail is not mowed from the closure gate up to the levee. You have pass through the weeds from trail end up to the levee. Just FYI. Still better option than getting out on Hwy 40 detour!!

Recently received the two t-shirts we ordered plus the two maps (from the Merchandise tab). In reality, I just wanted a laminated map for our first Katy Trail ride -- but since they're $1 with a t-shirts, decided to order us a couple for a "souvenir." They are really quality shirts. Generous in size -- (I got a small, which is a "Men's" small, and a little large for me, but it's fine). The nice laminated MAPS will be handy as we go along the trail -- especially since it'll be our first trip and easy to check mileage and next town. Thanks!
