Joey's Bird House in McKittrick is the best place to stay. We have used it several times and it's great.

Was planning to ride the first half of this year's MO Double Cross starting in Clinton on August 29. Got word that it has been canceled. Was planning to shuttle back to car and drive to Columbia on the September 3rd for Ped Jam. Anybody else out there that was planning to do Double Cross? Interested in still making the ride? Got some ideas how to make it happen. Based on what I've read below, might be better to start in Defiance and ride west since Boonville to Rocheport isn't looking so good.

Dougt from Onawa, Ia on 07/25/2021 11:15 AM
I wasn't aware of these events and want to schedule my out and back Katy Trail ride to avoid any mass events on the trail if possible. I'm looking at starting Sept 7 or 8 and taking around 6-7 days to do it. Are there any trail events that I should be aware of?
Are thorns an issue on the Katy? I do the Cowboy Trail every year and they are usually really numerous.
Thanks for any info!

I would definitely not ride on the highway. The bike path is great.

Deby from Dallas on 07/19/2021 08:40 PM
We were there in May, and if I remember correctly there is a way to get over to the Skywalk (which is really cool!) without getting on the highway. There is a trail other than Katy trail that heads toward Jefferson from the North Jefferson Trailhead. We took that going to the Skywalk to get into Jefferson, but that trail was a little rough and if it's been raining I don't imagine it would be in good shape. But going back to Katy the next day, we avioded that trial, and took city streets. I don't remember which streets, but it was not via highway. Be prepared for major hills in Jefferson, BTW.

Dale F from Prairie Village on 07/20/2021 03:16 PM
thanks for the feedback; it sounds like there is a way to get from the trailhead to jeff city without getting on the highway...

Jim from St Thomas on 07/20/2021 07:31 PM
It’s pretty easy. Take the Katy Spur from the N. Jefferson trailhead. The spur dead ends at Fourth Street. Go right on Fourth Street for 3 blocks to Cottonwood Street. Turn left on Cottonwood and follow it to where it ends at a parking lot. The path to the bridge pedestrian lane is at the southeast corner of the parking lot.

Dale F from Prairie Village on 07/21/2021 08:57 AM
Perfect, thanks for the detailed instructions...

No detours I know of at all. Many cabin guests and cyclists riding regularly. Last week still a little softer than usual with all the recent rain but in good shape. Be sure and check out Rock Island Cafe in Leeton and Hometown Convenience Store in Chilhowee. Carry plenty of water and enjoy - alot of shady stretches and beautiful farm land!

Katy Trail Supporter from Katy Trail-End to End on 07/20/2021 03:13 PM
I rode Rock Island-Pleasant Hill to Windsor Mon Jul 19 (first time). Many washed out areas but marked with orange cones. Many road crossings some blind. Medford an Leeton have rest, covered trailheads. No services along most of spur. I would have liked to have been the concrete contractor who did all the bridges. My suspicions this spur was originally used for primarily horse travel an turned into a bike trail too. I’ll wait a few years to ride it again.

Place wasn't open yet but a gentleman working on his computer sold us a couple of cold Cokes and gave us some info about the upcoming trail. He also said the business was working on getting the permits they needed to install a shower building and restrooms for the campground, and talked about other upgrades that were in the works.

Would have been nice to have gotten there a little later and had some food, but it was a good stop.

Is there currently water on the trail?

Ann Ohnomus from Golden on 07/20/2021 07:35 AM
Water on the trail depends on the weather. Sometimes it is dry and dusty and at other times it is wet and muddy.

JP from Bonne Terre on 07/20/2021 10:19 AM
I'm sorry. I was asking if there was water available to drink on the trail.

Ray (webmaster) on 07/20/2021 10:35 AM
A lot of the trailheads have running water, which is turned on at all except maybe Dutzow.

Check out this link to the trip planner, listing all the trailheads, libraries, and other places offering free water:

https://bikekatytrail.com/planner.aspx?scid=10&ecid=11&rt=0&svcs=|10|

Of course, there are also convenience stores, restaurants, etc at towns along the way, where you can buy water and other drinks.

Planning to ride the trail in September; from Pleasant Hill to St Charles; or the other way around. Does the elevation change make a difference in the overall ride -- should we start in PHill and go east; or start east side and ride back west? thanks

Bill in Houston from Houston on 07/19/2021 03:11 PM
Wind makes a bigger difference. For that reason, people usually ride West to east.

Anonymous on 07/19/2021 07:16 PM
Wind can make a difference if is is blowing. The uphill grade between Boonville and Pilot Grove and between Clifton City and Sedalia is always there. Although we have ridden both directions, west to east is preferred.

Wind direction is to be determined along the river and bluffs as it often swirls and can change direction as you pass.

Keep in mind the trains of old only had a 5% grade to deal with so any elevation change may be irrelevant. If you have previously ridden 100 miles to approach Boonville, Lard Hill may be a strain heading west. If you are starting the day in Boonville, the hill may be less noticeable.

I see on previous discussions the trail may hay some problems and possible detours. Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether these will be resolved by Labor day?

Also is there a place to find a map showing camping spots along the Katy?
I will have a large group starting in St Charles.

Call (573) 657-4529. Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast in Hartsburg. We will try to help you.
How "big" of a group are you expecting?

Ray (webmaster) on 07/19/2021 07:14 AM
Hey Luther,
Unfortunately the detour between Rocheport and New Franklin will almost certainly still be needed at Labor Day.

Here is a list of all camping locations that I know of:
https://bikekatytrail.com/katy-trail-camping.aspx

And here you can see camping spots plotted out on a map:
https://bikekatytrail.com/katy-trail-map.aspx?interval=1&cid=10&mmtyp=trl&userLocCenter=0&distance=50&siteTypes=|4|

This map only shows the camping within a 50-mile radius of the map's center (it starts out centered at Augusta, so you see everything from the eastern end of the trail to about Portland). To see camping spots further west, click Edit Settings, change the "Center Map At" city, and click Apply.

Good luck and have fun out there with your group!

I’ve never had an issue going thru the gates. Occasionally 1 of my mirrors would touch the arm (my mirrors mount pretty high)).
My trike is 30” wide

Jim from Colorado on 07/18/2021 08:10 AM
I've ridden the Katy twice with my recumbent trike and never had a problem going between or under a gate. I don't think you have to worry about it. Enjoy the ride, it's a blast on a recumbent.

Bruce Laubach from Williamsburg, VA on 07/18/2021 08:47 AM
The gates are offset from each other. So if you go through at an angle you have a little more clearance.

I see a lot of negative comments about Coppers Landing. I have been stopping there for the last 7 years .Under the new ownership there have been new changes but everything I saw have been for the good yes it used to be $6 instead of $30 to camp. A shower house would be good. Hopefully that in the future. I have been on the whole trail and there are a lot of nice places but none that have the river view with some of the best music around. It’s a 70 mile ride there but it’s worth it every time

Karen C. from Harrisburg, MO on 07/10/2021 05:38 PM
I was talking to them one day and they mentioned the things they would like to do to the place. A shower house and real bathrooms were mentioned. Woo hoo!

I have not camped there yet but I stop regularly and purchase something to enjoy while watching the river. My observation the last few months is to make sure you know the price of what you are buying. The first time it happened I thought there were price increases but the next couple times with a different person behind the window, it was the price I had been paying every weekend for the same thing (pre-tip). When I mentioned it this last time I was charged double for two items the kid said not to worry about it and took what I had ready. Soooo...just be aware. Which we should anyways, right? :-)

Costanza from WV on 07/14/2021 09:21 AM
I stopped by there for a snack last month. Other than being out of Snickers, it was great. Whoever waited on me (originally from PA) was very polite and helpful. He made sure I had an outlet to charge some electronics, and even apologized for not realizing he was out of Snickers lol.

Karen C. from Harrisburg, MO on 07/15/2021 06:19 PM
Costanza from WV, that is a bummer they were out of Snickers! They refrigerate them so they are extra good! I am excited to meet your PA person that is working there. It really is a neat place and they have great plans!
But this darn weather...the rain keeps slowing things down...but not the music! :-)

Keeps them off Hwy 40. Not sure what the condition of those backroads is.

Gary from Blue Springs on 07/15/2021 12:56 PM
That has been well documented and you can find info on it here:

https://mostateparks.com/advisory/79936/temporary-trail-detours-katy-trail-state-park

On the two FaceBook groups ("KATY Trail Rider Group" & "Fans of the Katy Trail Group"), several posts about it including even walking across if/when the water level is low, which isn't the case now due to recent heavy rains.

MapMedic from KCMO on 07/15/2021 02:12 PM
Gary I think he's asking about an alternate route that does NOT involve getting on the 55 MPH 40 Hwy. The link he posted shows what appears to be a scenic gravel route with a few hundred feet of hills involved.

Bill in Houston from Houston on 07/15/2021 03:04 PM
Yes, what MapMedic said. A far less death-defying route. Adds ~180 feet of vertical.

I live 2 miles from the stadiums. I have ridden Rock Island from the stadiums to the Vale Tunnel.
I have a goal to ride from the Stadiums to Pleasant Hill ( I know a short ride, but I am a novice)
Should I use Google Maps to find the best route from the Trail Head in Lees Summit to Pleasant Hill or do you all have a preferred route. I plan on staying in PH for the evening and then riding back home.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Mark from Lee's Summit on 07/13/2021 10:19 AM
Do you like to ride on the shortest route even if there is a fair amount of traffic and no shoulders? Or do you want the absolute easiest, low traffic route that takes a longer, winding route to Pleasant Hill? If you want the long, low-traffic route, then use the paved bike trail/sidewalk (8' wide paved trail on the west side of Ward) along Ward Road all the way down to 150 Hwy. Then use the 150 Hwy. sidewalks east under Hwy. 291 and then turn right onto the southbound east outer road into Greenwood. Wind through all of the Greenwood residential subdivisions to South Allendale Lake Road and use that winding route to link up with the Pleasant Hill MOPAC Rock Island Trail connector. South Allendale Lake Road changes names about 4 times as it winds towards Pleasant Hill and the pavement is not in great condition, but that also means fewer cars.

Detroit Derek from Kansas City 64133 on 07/13/2021 04:45 PM
Mark, I appreciate the info and I see where you are talking about on Maps. I would prefer less traffic, so is 150 Hwy from Ward to Bellflower recommended for a beginner? Or would I be better off riding the subdivision. Only thing I see with the subdivision off of the outer road is only one street connects to Bellflower, as most of the subdivision streets are all cul-de-sacs.
It will be nice when this trail connects PH to LS
Thanks again!

Mark from Lee's Summit on 07/14/2021 11:12 PM
So the long, winding route through Greenwood is south from 150 on the east outer road, turns left onto Saddlebrook, turn left (north) on Doc Henry, right onto Cherokee, right onto 20th, left onto Allendale Drive, and right onto South Allendale Lake Road. You can ride the half mile east on the two lane road of 150 Hwy. straight to Doc Henry, but I enjoy a more relaxed winding ride even if it is longer.

Where did you find a one night lodging in P Hill? Or is it friends/family? The AirBnb in P Hill has a two night minimum which is problematic for my upcoming trip as a through traveler.

What a great place! We were a small group that had been cycling for 40 days, and this place was a balm to the soul for weary cyclists. Joey was a wonderful host, and we wanted for nothing. I have several dietary issues which make eating out challenging a lot of the time. However, Joey put together the first breakfast I had eaten on this trip that I hadn't made myself and that I knew was safe! The beds were comfortable, the decor charming, and overall the peacefulness of the Birdhouse made us want to stay longer. Thank you, Joey!

We took Amtrak from Jefferson City to Hermann on Monday. We stayed at the Crown. It is well set up for bicyclists and excellent staff. After a lot of rain in Hermann on Monday 7/12/21, we took to the trail from McKittrick to N. Jefferson on Tuesday. There were people working on getting the trail. The trail was rough in many places but completely open. The key was to take it easy. If we were riding fast it could have been disastrous. There were many washboard conditions and areas that the trail had deep mud/sand. Each day without rain will make it an easier ride. Best of luck!

I am planning a short (unsupported) two day bikepacking ride beginning Friday June 16 at the Mokane Trailhead and riding east to Hermann (camping in Hermann) and then a return ride to Mokane. Any trail conditions to note? Asking because originally planned to do Columbia to Boonville but heard the trail is in bad shape presently. Any update for the Hermann-Mokane area would be appreciated.

Just rode this stretch 7/11. Due to the storm on 7/9 (and a couple weeks prior) there are trees/branches down but nothing that would make it impassable. Trail is well marked with "rough surface" signs...and they are...either ridges, ruts or loose gravel/rock. BE CAREFUL riding too close to the edge/foliage areas as we had three flats due to cockle burrs getting under the tire rims. You'll have no problems with the route. Bar and grill open in Portland, otherwise on Sunday there were not many places to stop. BEWARE of the mosquitos...they are huge and will swarm within seconds of stopping on the trail, especially with all the water and shade!

I just used the KT bathroom facilities. I got dinner at the hitching post and even ran into the mayor who told me it was fine to camp there. It's right next to houses, so you should just plan to be quiet as you could easily disturb the neighbors if you're loud late into the night.
