e-bikes on Katy
-  + Ebikes...touring with e bikes but daily miles about 38-40 miles.
Can these rental e-bikes travel those daily distances?
Has anyone toured the entire route on an e-bike?
Thanks in advance!

George, Ive done the trail by ebike but you need to plan with a charger or extra batteries. Depending on your bike most ebikes get 35-40mi (if you dont put on the higher settings) but finding a charge at a gas station or restaurant or hotel is a must.
My bike is a road ebike so I can get 60-70mi which is not a problem plus I have an extender (no jokes) for about another 45-50 mi. It would be nice to have receptacles at trail heads but then the trail wouldn't be "primitive"

+While we love Meriwethers it wouldn't be the primitive trail we all know and love if everything was as good as it is. This not for the wine drinking, vegetarians, caviar eatrs (although they are welcome too). Having to have a kingsize bed and a flush toilet seems to defeat the whole idea of our trail.
Jim from St Thomas on 06/15/2022 04:34 PM
I always thought the whole idea of our trail was for people to get out and enjoy themselves whatever that might entail. Hell, I’ve even accepted that Coopers now caters to a demographic I’ll never belong to - never to return to what I consider it’s glory days of 50 cent Stag beers. Also, I am a huge fan of flush toilets having used many of the Katy’s pit toilets in the heat of summer. It may build character but I’m not sure it’s the character you want to build.

Arrived in Lees Summit on Amtrack around 9:30 pm and rode to Pleasant Hill lake to camp. Rode in the dark with a good flasher and handlebar light without any issues. Google directions and take smart road. Lake camping was really nice, nothing fancy but good tent sites. I opted to camp without putting mt tent up which was a big mistake at 2 am when tornado sirens started. Luckily it was only rain and I learned my lesson the remaining four nights and slept in my tent. Rode a rock island spur trail into pleasant hill the next day. Good option for camping- in a tent!

Website is difficult to navigate and figure out what site you want to reserve. Paid $8 for a can of beer. Now te good. Very good live music and food vendor the Thursday I was there. Campsite had a river view. Staff was great. Overall I would recommend if you know that it is pricy.

Dinner was awesome, continental breakfast was a bit too basic for a cyclist to fuel up.

We're interested in riding from Lees Summit to Washington via Rock Island Spur & Katy Trail in June. Some of the appeal of this trip was to use AmTrak for the return. But now I'm stumped trying to decipher how or even if we can get our bikes on train. I suppose the choice of words on their website might make sense after getting there but that would be too late to sort out ineligibility.
- For bike packing trips we ride 2 Surley ECRs with 27.5 x 3.0 tires. Are we not allowed? We have other bikes but none with tires less than 2.1".
- Is it a recent change that BoB trailers can be packed in boxes?
- I've seen other forum comments that indicate trouble trying to get bike reservations in June. Are "bike reservations" only an issue for more convenient berthing of skinny tire bikes? If dismantling and boxing MTBs, touring, or expedition bikes are reservations still required?
- What does AmTrak's wording about "in lieu of baggage" mean? If we box our bikes would we not be able to carry the stuff we had to take off the bike? Would we not be able to consolidate and check our bike bags?
- Is the process simpler and more accommodating than the AmTrak website sounds or is the "bike service" really only practical for commuters on skinny bikes?
madununibomer from op on 06/07/2022 02:07 PM
amtrack let me on with my fully loaded surly disc trucker[ with 26 inch wide tires],but from what I understand they wont allow bike trailers.
Gary from Central FL on 06/07/2022 11:34 PM
Hey Mad, Thanks for sharing that info. Interesting that they didn't fuss about your 2.1" wide tires. Our Mountain Bikes are only 2.1" but I'm not comfortable just hoping I don't encounter Mr Bythebook the day we want to board. For these kinds of trips we're just more comfortable on our ECRs and there's no hiding those 3" tires. Anyhow, because of food uncertainties & the distance between some motels we've decided to do this as another bike packing trip rather than a credit card ride. So with camp gear, cook systems, & self sufficient food supply a BoB trailer will be following my bike. The AmTrak website does now say trailers can be shipped but in a box. Mine would need to be totally dismantled to fit their required box dimensions. I just don't feel like doing that on top of partial disassembly & boxing of two bikes. On top of all that some wording on the AmTrak website confused me on what to do with all of our other gear. Anyhow, we'll pedal back to start.

My wife and I stayed the night at the Globe Hotel on 10/23/21. Spent a couple of hours in Hartsburg at the new Burg Deli and the Hitching Post and then retired to the Hotel. The weather forecast wasn't good for the next day so we decided to leave early before breakfast the next morning to get to our next stop before bad weather hit. Leaia (I hope the spelling is close) fixed us a bag breakfast and a bag lunch that we were still finishing two days later. Great stop!

My friend and I stayed at the Globe B&B on May 5 on our way across the entire Katy Trail. As the only guests that night, we were each given private rooms for no extra charge, and had a great breakfast in the morning. Before riding I discovered a flat tire, which I was able to quickly find, with the help of a large water tub, fix, and inflate, with the help of a hand pump. They were little things, but were very helpful and appreciated - the type of things, and hosts, which make bicycle trips more memorable and enjoyable. Thank you Leaia and Mark!

She and Drew combined to provide the best breakfast of our trip. Next time we’ll try to arrange for dinner also. The grocery store is nearby. The room is comfortable. What can I say about Bluffton Barn?! First let me say it was comfortable, we got EVERYTHING we were told we would get and more.
We were only coming from Hermann as it had been raining and we didn't want to stay another day there. So I called Doug, the owner of BB, and asked if he had room and the price. He told me in detail what he had; so we made the short ride out there (only 12 miles) between rain showers.
We were pleasantly surprised to meet Doug and of course Freckles and Spot, his two dogs. We spent the afternoon talking with Doug and hearing about his cycling experiences and his musical endeavors. You will have to ask him about that but we are going to try to get to a 'rendezvous' they hold.
We highly recommend Bluffton Barn! Come sit and stay a while!

Our’s was a through trip from Clinton to St Charles. After a night in St. Charles we rode back to Washington and caught the train to Sedalia, spent the night and finished with a ride the next day to our car in Clinton. This type of round trip worked well for us allowing for 6 days of riding with an enjoyable 2.5 hour trip on Amtrak to shorten the return.
Be sure to book tickets for your bike(s) along with your passenger tickets. Our total cost for two passengers and two bikes from Washington to Sedalia was $80. Be ready to take large bags (panniers) off the bikes before loading. In our case the bikes were lifted up into the back of a passenger car and hung by the front wheel in an open compartment.

The proprietor, Bernard, had offered to give us a ride the last few miles but we managed to complete the day by bike. Honest feedback. Doug was very hospitable. My wife and I were riding the Katy full length and rented Doug's loft in the barn (he lives below). As he promised when I emailed him our dinner food list, he shopped and had the groceries in the loft upon arrival; everything exactly as we requested. Paid cash for that on top of room fee. But, the loft was not clean. If you are used to super-host Abnb's or nice B&B's, this is not the place. My wife was grossed out; she is sensitive to cleanliness. If you are just some guys passing through and don't mind those conditions, looking for a bed, shower and spot to have adult bevs, then this is the place for you. Also, the breakfast fruit, etc mentioned at reservations was not offered in the morning. Hope this is useful for travelers. Not trying to disparage Doug and the Barn. Had I read a review like this of the Barn, I would not have visited.

First off my place is clean but not cutesied up. I know my place is not for everyone and I told you when you reserved I am not Granmas lace and doilies but Uncle Dougs beer and bonfires. I also told you the room rates and the meal package rates. You opted for me shopping and reimbursed me for what I spent. I even included some items that I had here for no charge. I did not charge for the service. You did not get the items on meal package because you did not opt for them. If this were a really honest post you had ample opportunity to discuss your concerns with me directly that evening while we visited or in the morning over coffee while working on your bikes. I can understand your wife not liking my place. I get it. I am definitely geared towards groups of guys and families with kids. Don't claim the moral high ground and honesty but then leave out the details that would fulfill that obligation.

Hi, we we looking at flying into St. Louis and then biking from there to Kansas City (we would need to leave from the Kansas City airport. I'm having a bit of trouble confirming what happens after the Rock Island trail ends in Pleasant Hill. How would we bike from Pleasant Hill to Kansas City. I imagine we could stay in any hotel in Kansas City and then a hotel shuttle to the airport with our bike boxes.
Thanks!
Mark from Lee's Summit on 06/26/2021 07:30 PM
The Rock Island Trail extension from the Katy Trail actually ends in Pleasant Hill, then there is an 8 mile gap from Pleasant Hill to Lee's Summit (a suburb just southeast of Kansas City). You an use low traffic county roads and several bike paths to ride this gap in the trail. In Lee's Summit, the Rock Island Trail picks back up again and runs for 13 miles into Kansas City where it ends by the Chiefs/Royals stadium complex. From there, you can take a low traffic street a couple of miles and link up with the Blue River/Brush Creek trail system that takes you into the Plaza area of Kansas City. Then you can take the Gilham Road cycletrack into the heart of the city by Union Station. At this point, you have lots of options: 1) take the Grand bike lane to Downtown KC, cross the Missouri River on the Route 9 bike path, link up to Northland trail system (mainly the long Line Creek Trail) and ride your bikes all the way to the airport hotels near Tiffany Springs Parkway or 2) from Downtown KC, take the KCATA 229 bus (there are bike racks on the front bumper) to the airport area. If any of these options interest you, then let me know and I can provide more details. I will say that bike access leaving the airport in St. Louis stinks, but there are couple of route options available if you are not planning on using some kind of shuttle.

Thanks, this is super helpful. We are thinking September=. We would actually do Kansas City to St. Louis as I didn't know that was the recommended route. I was a bit surprised there wasn't more of a formal post on how to do this for those of us that are flying into Kansas City or St. Louis just to do the trip. Any additional info for St. Louis would be great! We were also thinking/hoping to hit up a Royals and then a Cards game on the trip as well if the baseball game dates aligned.

Ceric did you do this? I am toying with same plan...fly into KC with only a bike, bike the Rock Spur & Katy trail to St Louis Airport, fly out. If you did, any pointers would be great
Mapmedic from KCMO on 12/22/2021 12:03 PM
What format did you want those directions? I use Garmin connect and I do have a Strava, but would not consider myself proficient in their use. In September I rode across the entire state starting in Westwood, Kansas making my way to the Rock Island trail (which starts at Arrowhead stadium, ends in Lees Summit, MO then starts up again at Pleasant Hill, MO where it currently ends at Windsor, MO. Then I rode the Katy to the east end and continued northeast to river ferry over to Grafton, IL before riding down to the Old Chain of Rocks bridge and to St Louis. Total miles was 394. I can help with some routes through KC and I live by the airport so am very familiar with routes, roads and trails, particularly north of the river (everything north of the Missouri River from downtown to near airport) You can search my “name” on here, I think there is a link to my ride. Also, this is a helpful website (I used it before my trip) but probably will not generate as much useful feedback as Facebook group “fans of the Katy Trail” where you can read old posts, search key words and my name, McCollom.
Here is a very rough idea of getting you from KCI (MCI) to downtown and I’m going to do it by means of landmarks, trails, etc: 152 Trail ( at N Amity or N Line Creek Pkwy then take the beautiful Line Creek Trail to Argosy Casino in Riverside, MO. Cross Missouri River via US 69 highway bridge adjacent to casino, ride through very industrial Fairfax district which is in Kansas City, Kansas to Kaw Point which is a Lewis & Clark historic site. Explore the park a few minutes then go to the southwest end of the parking lot where you’ll find a pedestrian/bike bridge to 3rd street then go south on 3rd and take a left under the I-70 viaduct where the lower level of that bridge is a bike trail …this can be located using Google street view. This trail will take you into the “west bottoms” area and a few blocks later you will cross into Missouri. You’re on your own from here…if you want to see the city market/farmers market and then downtown I suggest searching for “Town of Kansas Observation Deck” City Market has plenty of walk up places to eat (LOCK YOUR BIKE….plenty of homeless people trying to survive in the city) Alternative route: from west bottom area search for Boulevard Brewing Company which can be a waypoint and/or stop to sample beer…it’s a really cool place and could also be done after city market. After these places you may want to look up your own route or waypoint the Country Club Plaza followed by Brush Creek Trail and then Arrowhead stadium where the Rock Island begins in Lot D…by the way the trail is new enough that Google maps and street view don’t show it. If you can ride through the city on a weekend it would be better traffic wise.

if you ride thru the leeds district get on raytown rd you will see the north gate[ gate 5]you see the chiefs training facility on your left go thru the gate stay to the right you can ride between the baseball and football statiums the rock island is on the south side.its acouple of miles from the north gate to the trail.

Sorry for the delay all.
We are planning on doing the trip in April, so we haven't done it yet.
St. Louis Cardinals are out since when we get to St. Charles, the Cards aren't in town. We are planning on going to the Royals game though April 16th.
Since we will be renting e-bikes, plan is to spend the night at an airport hotel on April 15th and then take the KCATA 229 into downtown. Depending on the Royals schedule, we will either go to the afternoon game or do something in the town first. We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express south of the Royals stadium 2 miles from the Rock Island trail. I'm using the route from the ridewithgps to for the gap on the Rock Island trail, so not sure if I still need any specific directions at this point since we aren't brining our bikes to MCI.

Good morning to all. I was wanting to ride the Rock Island from K.C. to Beaufort. My Grandfather ended up being a Section Foreman on that section of the rail for the R. I. RR. who he worked for from 1917 to about 1965. I didn't know him very well, I am the youngest of all the cousins, and would like to ride this section. Dose anyone know the progress of the trail from Windsor to Beaufort, or a target date for completion. etc. I'm ready to go.
Jim from St Thomas on 05/24/2022 07:05 PM
My guess is that we are years away from having the trail completed from Windsor to Beaufort.
michael a rodemeyer from Hartsburg, Mo on 05/25/2022 02:28 PM
The Missouri legislature turned down the $70 million recommended by republican governor for development of the Rock Island Trail. The Missouri Farm Bureau had heavily lobbied AGAINST the new trail despite the infusion of money and visitors that would have been brought to the little towns. So, it may take years, if ever, to develop.

Bad news: They close at 2:00 on Sunday and there was nothing else open in Rhineland. But we were forewarned and got takeout for dinner - also very good - and our story had a happy ending.

I rode thru there yesterday, looks like there is just a couple of inches over the trail now, which could be little dicey if you wish to navigate. I think with no more rain, it will be good in a few days.

Just rode that today. The detour to get off the trail is clearly marked, but the small spur to get back on the trail it’s not clearly Marked you have to look out for it.

We stayed at Joey's Birdhouse on April 25, 2022 after biking from St. Charles. This is a wonderful place to stay and just a stone's throw away from the trailhead. The room was cozy, our bikes were stored safely in the garage, there were little snacks available upon arrival ... and the bed was extremely comfortable. We arrived early evening, too late to head into Hermann, so Joey drove us to Loutre Market nearby and waited while we ordered a pizza and picked up some Midnight Whistle beer made by the Tin Mill Brewery in Hermann. Breakfast the next morning was the best of the trip. Joey, Richard and Drew joined for coffee and delightful conversation. Places like this are what make the Katy much more than a nice rail trail. We will definitely stay here on our next Katy ride.

There were snacks on the table, French press coffee at the ready, comfortable bed, spacious room, and even a hanging drying rack for our rinsed out clothing. There were chairs and tables on the front porch, a bike rack and a safe place to store our bikes in a barn. Joey and Rick were most welcoming. The delicious breakfast made by Joey and served by Drew was a special treat. Joey’s Birdhouse is a peaceful, relaxing place to stay, and an easy ride to Hermann. I highly recommend a stay at Joey’s Birdhouse.
