A friend and myself had planned a ride on the Katy which included a stay at Choo Choo's campground. We had called ahead and made reservations. On our arrival we found the place closed. And needless to say the camp area less than inviting. We were very disappointed in everything. We ended up going to Scenic Cycles and camping there for the evening.

Thanks for the info.
Last year I stayed at the Marthasville rec center camping area, and was planning on doing so this year. Is there some reason you didn't stay there?
Also, is Scenic Cycles offering camping now, or was that just a one-time deal? Did it have showers, bathroom etc? Price?
Thanks for the info.

Yes Scenic Cycles is now offering camping. They are a little over a mile east of Marthasville. I am sure that if you email Terry or Kathy at SC they can give you the details.

If I understand the Marthasville Chamber of Commerce website, ChooChoos is closed on Wednesday's in season and isn't open at this time of year:
Our facility allows guests to camp, snack and/or bike.Enjoy Your Day! Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m./daily
May 21st - Labor Day weekend-seasonal Closed on Wednesdays
Of course there are several possible interpretations of that message!

Well our trip was Labor Day weekend, we called a couple weeks before and set up our stay, and we were there at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and not a sole in site and the place was closed. Don't care how you want to interpret their listing on the Chamber's site, we called ahead and they should have 1. known we were coming and been there and open or 2. known they would not have been open and informed us of that when we called and we would have made other arrangements.

I rode through Marthasville today (Oct 8), and believe it or not Choo Choos was open. There is a sign stating that they're open weekends until Oct 30. My guess is that the high school kid working the day you got there probably decided to cut out of work early, or never showed up in the first place. There's no excuse; I'm just speculating.

By the way, the ice cream was tasty and they have a horse-tire swing that kept my kids entertained for nearly an hour. But the water in the restroom has a bad smell - if you're looking to fill your water bottles, you may want to hold out for bottled water from the convenience store. The S&R convenience store, which is visible looking south from the trail, is easily reached by heading south on the road that crosses the trail right by the trailhead (One St) for just over a quarter mile. It's right by One St at Hwy 47 - see the map on the

Choo-choos is a great place to go, if you have kids it is also very recomended in my book. There is a variety of things to get and you have the chance to meet a lot of nice people. the camping has bathrooms and a shower and is cheaper at 5 dollars per person rather than Scenic cycles which charges 20 per person.Choo-choos is a great place and i love the caboose.

I planned a field trip for 18 preschoolers a while back with Choo Choo's being part of our itinerary. I called ahead and was told they would be open. I informed the owner that we would be bringing f18 children and that this was part of a field trip, we had been learning about trains and transportation. The kids were excited about this and were counting the days. We arrived as planned to find Choo choo's closed and looking somewhat abandoned. The children were devastated and I had to try to come up with refreshments for them and then try to keep them from running around the caboose where the weeds were almost taller than them. This place has potential, but needs an owner that really cares about it's customers. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I know of 18 children that feel the same way.

A charming but very quiet little town, mid-week in July. We stayed at Anchor Mills B&B, a delightful house with a warm and welcoming hostess in Kathleen Turner. Excellent breakfast food and coffee! Be sure to have food available for an evening meal though, as all the eateries in town close around 5pm mid-week. Cafe Bella is a nice place to eat.
Be sure also to have bug repellent ready, as a drainage ditch runs alongside the Trail here and the biters are out in force. The wineries are well worth a visit.

The hearing to approve this will be held Aug 21st at the Warren County Government center. Phone #636-456-3044 for directions
I do not look forward to riding with my family and hearing gunfire.
I hope you all feel the same. We will have an opportunity to voice our opposition to this a the hearing.
If you know people who enjoy the trail please pass this information along.
email me if you have any resources that can help stop this!!! rdausjr@earthlink.net

We have outstanding trails in the Denver area and one goes right next to the gun range. I'm sure the developers and city planners will have safety in mind first and foremost. The two things in life that I enjoy doing most are cycling and shooting. I'm sure they both can co-exist.
I guess because you don't want your family to hear gun noise that this should not happen? I don't see the shooters trying to close the bike trail. The shooting sports are filled with very good people just doing what they love and enjoy. Check it out sometime. I'm sure you would be suprised. It's not a bunch of gansters and thugs. Hope they get their range. Chill out and quit forcing your opinions on things you obviously know nothing about down people's throats.
Bike Cop from KCMO on 07/09/2008 11:18 PM
There is this little thing called the 2nd ammendment. Gun ranges and the sound of (legal) gunfire = freedom. I bike CCW.
Doug from Bluffton on 07/10/2008 08:10 AM
I think it would be fantastic to be able to ride with my empty cased guns to the range and do some target shooting and then ride home. A great safe place to shoot. Awesome. Depending on exactly how close the range is to the trail I can't imagine a rider being able to hear the gunfire for more than a minute or two of their ride. I doubt if even that would be very intrusive. Less than fireworks going off.
Anonymous on 07/10/2008 08:40 AM
I'd actually feel more comfortable riding next to a gun range than I would riding katy trail during hunting season. Shooters are more likely to pull a Dick Cheney when they are out hunting than on a gun range.
greg on 07/10/2008 09:35 AM
Man, I just love when someone like you clammer's for the rights of cyclist and then thinks nothing of the rights of others! It's a shooting range "get over it" might wanna try moving to "the peoples republic of california" I hear it's sheer bliss. What's next? you gonna go after the books people read? because there not up to your standards? gotta go now, i'm strappin'my rifle to my bike and goin' ridin! take care Adolf....

Greg, are you the best shill the NRA's got? Or just the crudest? I own a gun, by the way. I don't want to hear gunfire on the trail either.

We stayed here the week before Memorial Day and I did not notice a cat smell either. The cats are not allowed in the rooms, and we didn't see them unless we went looking for them.
I wasn't happy about the shared baths - until I saw them. There are three - one with a shower, one with a tub, and one with just a toilet. Plus sinks in every room. VERY comfortable, wonderful breakfast and she had lemonade for us the minute we arrived.

I stayed at the Globe Hotel in late May 2008 on my Colorado Springs to Ohio bike ride. The Globe and the innkeeper, Jeanette were both fantastic. I arrived late in the day with no reservation and she was there when I needed her-it was too late to go to the next town. There were cats there, but I didn't consider them a problem. Very welcoming B & B and recommended. Nice bar just a couple doors down from the B & B and I do agree with a previous poster that Hartsburg is a low key town.

We mentioned that we wanted to grill bratwurst for dinner and even though there was already a grill there, when we arrived back he had left a Weber grill for us to use. We loved the area with the large woods in the back and enjoyed watching the horses across the street at night. We can't wait to come back and bring our grandson in the fall. It was a great and unusual way to spend a couple of days away from the busy city.

Just west of the McKittrick trailhead is a tunnel that goes underneath highway 19. Highway 19 southbound will take you to Hermann. On the east side of the tunnel is a pathway in the grass to the highway. That is what we do, or you can go east of the trailhead and back south to hook onto highway 94 which leads to 19. Click on McKittrick in the map above for a detailed map of the trailhead area.

Just do the math. Its about 80 miles so at 10 mph it would take about 8 hours of saddle time. If your realy fast and can hold 20 mph, make it 4 hours. Don't forget to factor in your breaks.

And If you can hold 20 on the trail for four hours we'll look for you on the Toure. Most riders probably only average about 70% of what they do on the road tho. Lots of variables even in that. How much are you hauling if anything? Did it rain? Do you like to stop and look or just go?
