Klondike Park in Augusta

You should have your Second Class rank pulled. Remember, it carries the Boy Scout Motto, "Be Prepared". Sounds like you weren't and assumed you could take what you forgot and didn't belong to you.

But everywhere you go they are telling you not to carry firewood from one place to another, due to ash borers. mh ia
Trek on 09/19/2011 03:13 PM
Missouri Dept. of Conservation will sure tell you that. I think Klondike is a County park. Maybe there are no ash trees in the park.
kevin from Jefferson City on 09/21/2011 01:23 PM
Carrying your firewood from St. Charles to St. Charles is not a problem. If there were invasive insects in the area, they'd eventually make it to Klondike park.
The big reason behind not moving firewood is to keep people from bringing firewood from, say, their campground in Minnesota or Illinois down to Missouri, or from southeast Missouri to St. Louis.
According to dontmovefirewood.org, moving firewood 10-15 miles is probably not too risky. Moving it 50 miles is.

kevin from Jefferson City on 09/21/2011 01:12 PM
Water levels along the Missouri have been dropping for a month. You shouldn't have any problems. Even during the high water times this summer, only a few short areas were affected by the water.
Looks like a great week for a ride.

We're taking the train to Washington on Saturday, November 5 and biking to Hermann. Is there a cab co. that can haul two recumbents (plus 2 humans) across the river? We're not staying in town, so a shuttle from a B&B is probably out! We'd gladly hitch a ride in the back of someone's truck.

Maybe use the power of social media like this forum to find others crossing the bridge on that day? The bridge is old, narrow, and with tons of big city traffic, but a group of bikers crossing would be safe where one or two might not.
Doug from Bluffton on 09/17/2011 11:05 AM
How about an ad on Craigslist for a ride wanted? Make an offer and see if someone local responds. Just be sure they understand what a recumbent is. I have had excellent luck with rides offered in the past.

New bridge over river. OK to ride across now but double check with MODOT
Doug from Bluffton on 09/18/2011 06:40 PM
When did this new bridge get built? Over the weekend? You must be thinking of the bridge at Hermann. It's the only new bridge over the Missouri river. There is a new pedestrian/bike lane over the river at Jefferson City but not a new bridge. The bridge at Washington is not easy to ride across but it's the highway on the north side of the river there that is awful to try to ride. NO SHOULDER and fast traffic. Far better to find a shuttle.

I would choose to go between Rocheport & Jefferson City. It's a scenic area. I haven't been there this year, so I'm not sure what the conditions are like, with the flooding and all. Have a great trip!

Thanks, Julie, I appreciate the suggestion. So is there anyone out there who can tell me the condition of the trail between Rocheport and Jefferson City?
Anonymous on 09/04/2011 09:56 PM
I agree. I don't know specific conditions at the moment, but I think the 25 miles from Rocheport to Hartsburg is one of the prettiest sections of the KATY.
KCSkeeter from Cass County, MO on 09/16/2011 09:36 PM
We just rode the trail for the first time from Rocheport east to the 159 mile marker on Thursday, 9/15, and found the trail in good shape. A few rough spots, a pot hole here and there and some puddles but nothing unreasonable. Considering the proximity to the river, it was in great shape. More tree coverage than we were expecting, so take a light jacket & some gloves. Can't wait to go back when the leaves start changing!!!

Be prepared if coming through on a Monday...I am not sure if they close early on every Monday, but it was quite disheartening to see the place closed when we pushed hard to get to Rhineland to eat...
justsayin from KC on 09/16/2011 06:41 AM
Consider yourself lucky. Many places are closed on Mondays along the trail.
Remember, a lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. Or a crisis or a problem etc. You're disheartened because you let yourself down.
Anon on 09/16/2011 09:00 PM
Yeah. And their food is fairly good too. But this happens all the time even tho this cafe is good about being open. Don't be too disappointed. It's all part of this trail's experience.
The simplest/best overall plan is to carry your own emegency/energy food, and then tank-up at whatever is open when you passby there. :)

Molly, Volunteer Park is a very small park right on the trail in Hartsburg that you can camp at. It has a Gazebo that you can set up under. American Legion Park, which is a mostly a softball field, located south of the trail is another possiblity in Hartsburg.

Some of the campgrounds there carry a few supplies: Katfish Kates, Coopers Landing, Wilton Store. Might want to get your stuff before starting out.

There are several places in Jefferson City, a short side trip from the trail and easy to get to now that there is a bridge bicycle/pedestrian path addition. Paddy Malones, Aris Pizza, Madison Cafe, and Prison Brews to name just a few.

Naw. Take the southbound spur just a few yards west of the trailhead to Airport Road (or whatever that road is called now). Then go east to cross the mentioned bridge. The business district is a block or two SSW from the Capitol bldg.
Pam from Independence on 09/12/2011 01:31 PM
Take the Greenway into town. It has signs marked to follow. The bridge now has a bike/pedestrian lane on the side of the bridge. Follow the ramp up and you can cross into Jeff City
Cathy from Jefferson City on 09/13/2011 01:36 AM
Pam is so right. Just look and you will see the trail from the North Jefferson Trailhead to the new pedestrian/bike path marked. If you want to see a video of the new pedestrian /bike path go to www.bethehistory.com and click on the "In 100 years" link. The video will not win an academy award or any spelling bee trophies but hey , I had fun making it. The bridge over the Missouri River at Jejjerson city is now safe and enjoyable for all. It is so safe that a few days ago I met a little old lady who had tone in her late 70s, in a wheelchair with her care giver on the bridge.
ChuckM from Houston on 09/13/2011 08:06 AM
Cool video Cathy. So up the winding ramp is how you access the bridge? Its hard to tell from the video but is there enough room for a tandem bicycle to make the turns on the ramp?

Let me tell you that the store there is for real. Modern it was not, but it had lots of atmosphere, cold drinks, and friendly service.

I'm so glad to see someone mention that little store. To me that kind of place makes the Katy Trail so much fun. The couple who own the store are Native American. They are mentioned in the Katy Trail book. The lady did illustrations of birds and maybe plants for a book about nature along the trail. I like the jewelry she makes.

The mileage chart on this web site will give you an accurate mileage count between towns.
GaryR from St. Louis, MO on 09/09/2011 08:29 PM
August is not the best time to be backpacking the Katy Trail unless you like sleeping naked on top of your pad, sweating and praying for a breeze. The end of August starts to see some cooling. Wait until October for the change of seasons and the wineries' October fests, or at least until mid-September for cooler and less humid weather.
