We are staying at the Hotel Frederick next Thursday before starting a ride to St. Charles in 3 days! I can't wait to see this property. It looks great from the website. I'm curious what the trail conditions are like between Boonville and Jeff City. I'm used to road biking so this is a new thing for me. Excited to give it a shot! Thanks in advance!

We are starting in Rocheport on Thursday morning and spending the night in Jeff City. Maybe we will meet somewhere on the trip. I hear that the conditions are good. Flooding was mostly west of Rocheport which we rode the day after it opened and it was packed wet clay but easy riding. Have a great time.

Just notice local motor vehicle traffic is using the Katy Trail starting at Cooper's Landing to Easley because of flooding of the River Rd. So just keep a heads up for cars on the trail. We will be a day ahead of you. We are staying at the Cliff Manor in Jeff City on Thursday. The Doll House in Rhineland on Friday and traveling into Herman on Saturday before heading back the KC. This year is our first on the Katy. We have done bits and piece of it and will have covered from Clinton to McKittrick after this weekend. Trying to find a time to finish is this year.

my wife and I are going to ride from roch port to St charles the week of september 4 to 9. we plan a bike trip on our anniversary every year and this will be our 40th anniversary.

I do not fit the female part. However, my son from NY and I are planning to ride somewhere around mid October, probably only from Boonville to Machens, taking three days to do that. We're just in planning stages, depends on when and if he can get in. But if you do not find any female riders, and just want to ride with some other people, you could check with me later so see if dates coincide.
Either way, enjoy the colors - should be good at that time.

I am also looking for a group to ride with. Here are a couple options I've cone up with:
Here is one option:
Day 1 - amtrak to Sedalia arriving ~ 1pm then riding a portion of trail
Day 2 - trail ride to tebetts
Day 3 - trail ride to Augusta
Day 4 - trail ride to St Charles where it would end
Option 2 (flexible schedule):
Day 1 - Amtrak to Sedalia and hit trail ending wherever
Day 2 - trail ride ending wherever
Day 3 - ride till done
I am open and flexible on schedule and lodging arrangements. If interested reply to posting or drop me an email (eaglewing@charter.net) with which option you would consider no later than 9-9-11.

Absolutely! Exit on Research Park, just a mile or two east of 94. Follow south till the road T's, then take the left towards the waste treatment facility. The Katy is .75 miles down a paved shady path accessed from the parking lot. You can't miss it.

This unique treat establishment is an old caboose parked right up to the Katy Trail as you enter/exit Marthasville from under the tunnel. It offers pizza, snack foods, ice cream, slushes, and much more for very cheap. Their prices are so low I'm surprised how they make it, but the food is delectable. Plus they have free wi-fi and parking, bike racks, and picnic table seating. Definitely worth the stop and money!

I agree. We stopped by the Caboose on Sunday on our ride from Clinton to St Charles. The Caboose is worth a stop. Convenient and a good selection of food/snack/drinks.

I ate there last September and the food was good. The waitress was all right. Then I wrote a comment about it being an ideal biker bar. Bicycles during the day and motorcyclists in the evening.

Stayed at Marthasville 9/29 and had to make a pilgrimage to the KT Caboose. It's west of
town before the Hwy 47 underpass. the new owners have made good improvements with an
expanded menu.

I got the impression talking to them that they believe there is enough traffic going through to stay open during the winter months. I am not certain about that, and they could change midstream. They really are excited to be in business and when I was by there a couple of weeks ago, the business was good.

We want to thank everyone for the positive feedback! We are very excited to be in business and we will be open during the winter months. We just received our stock of hot chocolate and we also have warm food to serve which includes pizza, hot dogs, warm pretzels and cheese, and nachos.
Right now we are open Monday-Friday from 10:30 to 8:00pm and Saturday-Sunday 9:00 to 8:00pm.
The winter hours are undecided at the moment but we will be open. Once the hours are certain I will post on here to keep everyone updated.

Its a new family owned business and the new owner is one of the sweetest people I've ever known!! And Momma Nina has the most infectious laugh EVER! ;-)

Angie puts out a good meal. It is a favorite local hangout. Closed at 2 pm on Sunday and closed on Monday. Otherwise dig in. I have eaten there more times than I can count. Sometimes the service is right on and sometimes it's a little slow. Kinda depends on the number of guests there at the time and what you order. If you are in a hurry let 'em know so they can maybe bump up the order. Chicken is great but takes a while. Holler cross the room for more tea, they won't mind.

Their country-fried-chicken lunches are terrific, possibly the best in the region for the money. I liked their chili, too, as a snack or smaller meal. :)

Also, do you have any advise on source for camping. The book and online sources show that sites are not available everywhere. Did you find any that weren't advertised?

I think your optimistic planning 15-20 mph. We rode in June, and found that 50 miles made a full day. Of course, we stopped at most of the markers, checked out the local history at the trail heads, and had a GREAT TIME. The book is good for trail and town information, but is completely unreliable for food and water availability. We camped - city park a couple of nights, Tebbetts Hostel, and at the Round House. PS: Bring lots of water and a couple of meals. Places are closed, and water supplies can be scarce. Businesses turn off public water faucets to sell bottled water.

50 miles a day is very doable, but 15-20 mph may be difficult. What's your hurry? Do 10-12mph and take a little longer to enjoy nature, the river and the attractions along the way.

I agree with the other comments. Rode the full length last November in three days (75 - 80 per day), but took time for photos, etc, ending up riding in the dark each day. 15-20 is very aggressive. Riding in the dark slowed my mph, I averaged 8 - 9 with full pannier, headwind, etc. Long time ago a bike shop owner told me that riding 50 miles on the trail is equivalent to 75 road miles, due to surface of the trail. If your 15 - 20 is on pavement, that would then convert to about 10 - 12 on the trail. Having a loaded bike will also slow you down, in my experience.

I echo the above comments. I usually figure on 10mph as a comfortable rate, then I add an hour. For example, if I intend to ride seventy miles I figure that this will take approximately 8 hours. This includes snack, water and scenic stops, but not long ones. It is mostly biking time. Of course, an early start is always good in case of any unexpected delays. I like this pace, but pace is personal. 15-20mph sounds a bit too ambitious.

I often ride certain sections at 17-18 mph. But I'm very familiar with the trail in these areas. And at that speed you pretty much miss seeing most of the things around you. If you ride 20 mph, I suspect your front wheel will go out from under you a few times. Loose rocks, small ruts, small limbs all come at you pretty quickly at that speed. And the squirrels have a death wish.
But I've found 15 mph to be pretty doable, giving sufficient reaction time for most obstacles. (Except those squirrels that dart right in front of you.) [Those are traveling speeds, not including stop times.]
